Best time to visit
When is the best time to visit Greece?
Facts checked against the cited sources on
Greece is a Mediterranean country with a long, dry summer, a wetter winter and two useful shoulder seasons, but the mainland, the southern islands and the Ionian coast differ more than a single country-wide answer allows. This page sets out the seasons with monthly climate figures for five stations, then lists best months by purpose, shoulder-season months and the wildfire season.
Temperature and rain figures come from the Hellenic National Meteorological Service, as republished by the WMO World Weather Information Service. The Athens and Thessaloniki stations list normals periods of 1955 to 1997 and 1959 to 1997, and the island stations list no period. Season notes come from Visit Greece and wildfire guidance from the UK government, read in October 2026. Our own stays in Greece are in the table below.
Greece's seasons in short
Greece has a Mediterranean pattern: hot, dry summers and mild, wetter winters, with spring and autumn between them. The station tables below show the shape clearly. At Athens the July average high is 33.5 degrees Celsius with 5.8 mm of rain, against 12.5 degrees and 56.9 mm in January. Because the summer is so dry, the choice of month is usually a trade between heat and crowds, rather than between sun and rain.
Most visitors plan around the beach season, but the shoulder months suit sightseeing and walking. The national tourism organisation, Visit Greece, promotes spring for wildflowers and fewer crowds and winter for ski areas and a quieter country, while the UK government's travel advice flags a high wildfire risk in summer. This page puts those together with monthly figures for five stations, read in October 2026.
Summer, June to August
Summer is hot and almost rainless. At Athens the average high is 31.1 degrees Celsius in June, 33.5 in July and 33.2 in August, with lows around 18 to 21 degrees, and July and August record only 5.8 and 6.0 mm of rain. Thessaloniki is a little cooler, at 29.2 in June and 31.5 in July. The islands are drier still: Rhodes has 0.2 mm in August on 0.1 of a day, and the Herakleion station on Crete 0.6 mm.
The island stations run slightly cooler by day than Athens. In July and August the average highs are 28.7 and 28.5 degrees at Herakleion and 30.5 and 30.7 at Rhodes, though warm nights keep the lows near 22. Visit Greece encourages visitors who prefer to avoid the summer crowds to travel in the winter, which is its own view of the trade-off. If you do travel between June and August, book early, plan sightseeing for the morning or evening and pack sun protection and water. The UK government's advice asks hikers in particular to check forecasts and avoid the hours of peak sun.
Spring, March to May
Visit Greece defines spring as March, April and May and describes bright skies, wildflowers, and fewer visitors before peak season. It also warns that higher ground is more likely to see cold spells and rain, that the days around Easter tend to be much busier than the rest of spring, and that, on the islands, fewer visitors can also mean fewer transport links and fewer open amenities, so plan ahead.
The Athens normals fit the picture. The average high rises from 15.7 degrees Celsius in March to 20.2 in April and 26.0 in May, and rainfall falls from 40.7 mm to 30.8 and 22.7 mm. Visit Greece itself quotes 16.1 and 25.1 degrees for March and May without naming a period, so the two sources differ slightly. The island stations are drier in May still: Rhodes 18.6 mm, Herakleion 14.2 mm, against 37.0 mm at Kerkyra (Corfu). For a city break in Athens, late April and May are the months where the temperature is warm but not yet summer-hot. Our guide to places to travel in May has other options.
Autumn, September to November
Autumn keeps summer warmth into September and then turns wetter. Athens averages a high of 29.2 degrees Celsius in September and 23.3 in October, with rain rising from 13.9 mm to 52.6 mm. The island of Rhodes is still very dry in September, at 5.8 mm, and records 65.5 mm in October. Corfu, in the Ionian Sea, is wetter earlier: 81.3 mm in September and 137.7 mm in October.
The pattern is a gradual hand-over. By November, Kerkyra (Corfu) records 187.4 mm, its wettest month, and Athens 58.3 mm. That makes September the main autumn month for sea-and-sun travel and October a good month for city walks, while November is the start of the wet half of the year. We have no visitor numbers by month, so we do not say how busy each month is. See also places to travel in September.
Winter, December to February
Winter is the wet season, and it varies by location. Athens records 69.1 mm in December, its wettest month, and a January average high of 12.5 degrees Celsius. Thessaloniki, in the north, is colder, with a January high of 9.3 and a low of 1.3. The southern islands stay milder: January highs are 15.3 at Herakleion and 15.1 at Rhodes, and Rhodes records 149.6 mm in January and 157.4 mm in December, more than Athens.
Visit Greece's winter page invites visitors to avoid the summer crowds, and lists Parnassos, Kalavryta, Kaimaktsalan, Vasilitsa, Tria-Pente Pigadia, Pelion and Mainalo among the country's biggest ski resorts. Its spring page notes that out of season fewer visitors can mean fewer transport links and fewer open amenities on the islands, so check ferry and accommodation availability for winter dates too. A longer winter stay in a city such as Athens or Thessaloniki suits people who prefer mild days to beach weather.
Mainland: Athens and Thessaloniki
The two mainland stations cover 1955 to 1997 (Athens) and 1959 to 1997 (Thessaloniki), so recent decades may differ. Athens has the hotter summer and the milder winter; Thessaloniki has colder winters, with a January low of 1.3 degrees Celsius, and a rainfall curve that is flatter, between 20.4 mm in August and 54.9 mm in December. Both are hot in July, at 33.5 and 31.5 degrees. Our Athens and Thessaloniki pages list the stays we hold.

Islands: Crete, Rhodes and Corfu
The WMO lists the island stations without a normals period, so we show the figures as published and flag the gap. Crete (Herakleion) and Rhodes in the south-east have warm winters and almost no summer rain. Corfu (Kerkyra) in the west is wetter in winter, with 185.6 mm in December and 187.4 mm in November, but is also dry in July, at 9.2 mm. All three have August highs of 28.5 to 31.3 degrees Celsius.
The tables only cover three stations, so other islands, such as those in the Cyclades, may differ. For stays see Heraklion, Rhodes and Corfu. Services vary by island and season, so confirm ferry timetables for your dates.

Wildfire, heat and earthquakes
The UK government's travel advice for Greece, read in October 2026, says there is a high risk of wildfires during the summer season from April to October. It tells travellers to call 112 if they see a fire, not to light fires or barbecues, and notes that causing a wildfire is a crime in Greece even if unintentional. It also lists extreme heat, earthquakes and flash floods as natural hazards, and advises checking forecasts and avoiding the sun's peak hours when hiking.
The advice window begins in April, so the seasonal risk it describes is not limited to July and August. This is a seasonal statement, not a report of conditions on any date: for fires, closures and alerts on your dates, check the UK advice page itself and the Greek civil protection ministry's site that it links to, follow instructions from local authorities, and allow emergency alerts on your phone. The sources we used list no hurricane-style season for Greece; the hazards they name are heat, fire, earthquakes and flash floods.
Best months by purpose
These pairings follow the sources above and are not a ranking.
- Beach and swimming weather: June to August, when Athens highs are 31.1 to 33.5 degrees Celsius and no station in the tables records more than 30 mm in a month.
- City sightseeing and walking: April, May and October, when the Athens average highs are 20.2, 26.0 and 23.3 degrees.
- Wildflowers and fewer visitors: spring, per Visit Greece, with Easter weekends busier.
- Skiing: winter, at resorts including Parnassos, Kalavryta, Kaimaktsalan and Vasilitsa (Visit Greece).
- Driest weather: July and August on the islands; Rhodes records 0.4 mm in July and 0.2 mm in August.
- Mild winter city stay: southern stations such as Herakleion, with a January high of 15.3 degrees, though winter is also the wettest period.
Shoulder season and planning
On the station data, the shoulder months are late April to May and September to October. They avoid the peak heat of July and August while keeping temperatures comfortable for the beach in September and for city visits in spring. Rain returns first in the west: Corfu records 137.7 mm in October, while Rhodes and Herakleion record 65.5 and 64.9 mm.
For longer stays, an apartment with a kitchen can help with the hot afternoons, and our guide to cooking in an aparthotel kitchen explains what to check. Our stays across Greece are in the table below. Entry rules are set by the Greek and EU authorities, so check the official immigration website before you plan.
Frequently asked questions
What is the hottest month in Greece?
At Athens the hottest month by average high is July, at 33.5 degrees Celsius, followed by August at 33.2 (1955 to 1997 normals). Thessaloniki peaks in July at 31.5. The island stations are slightly cooler by day, with Rhodes at 30.7 in August.
When does it rain in Greece?
Mostly from October to March. Athens records 69.1 mm in December and 5.8 mm in July. Corfu is wetter, at 187.4 mm in November, while Rhodes has 0.2 mm in August. Summer rain is rare at all five stations.
When is the wildfire season in Greece?
The UK government's travel advice, read in October 2026, says there is a high risk of wildfires in the summer season from April to October. It advises calling 112 if you see a fire and not lighting fires or barbecues.
Is spring or autumn better for visiting Greece?
It depends on your plans. Visit Greece describes spring for wildflowers and fewer crowds, with the days around Easter busier. On the station data, September keeps summer warmth and little rain at Rhodes and Herakleion, while October rain rises, especially at Corfu.
Can you visit Greece in winter?
Yes. Visit Greece promotes winter as a way to avoid the summer crowds and lists Parnassos, Kalavryta, Kaimaktsalan and Vasilitsa among the biggest ski resorts, with three more mountain areas also named. Winter is the wettest season at all five stations, so check ferry and accommodation availability for your dates.
