Bali draws people for very different trips, from a week of surf to several months of remote work, and aparthotels and serviced apartments cover that range well. A kitchen, a living area and laundry facilities matter on an island where many visitors stay for weeks, move between beach and hills, and spend long, hot afternoons indoors. Families also gain the space that a standard hotel room lacks.

Seminyak is the more polished neighbour of Kuta, with quieter beachside resorts and villas, highly regarded restaurants and smart bar-clubs. Legian, between Seminyak and Kuta, is a good place to learn to surf. The airport is a short drive south, traffic permitting.

Until around 2010 Canggu was mostly rice fields; it is now known for digital nomads, cafés and a long black-sand beach with challenging surf breaks at Echo Beach, Batu Bolong and Berawa. The coast runs on north through Pererenan towards Tanah Lot. Traffic is heavy and taxis are scarce, so most residents rely on scooters or ride-hailing apps.

Kuta is the most heavily developed part of Bali, with plenty of shopping and lively nightlife. It is the closest resort to Ngurah Rai International Airport, which sits between Kuta and Jimbaran, so it suits short stays and late arrivals.

Sanur is Bali's oldest upmarket resort area, with calm, reef-protected water and a paved beachfront path of about 5 km that is ideal for walking and cycling. Fast boats leave Sanur Harbour for Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida. The airport is about 20–30 minutes away by taxi.

Jimbaran, just south of the airport, has a sheltered bay and is known for seafood grilled on the beach at sunset. Nusa Dua, further round the Bukit Peninsula, is a planned enclave of large resorts. Both are calm bases close to the clifftop temple at Uluwatu.
Ubud is the island's cultural centre, with galleries, craft workshops, nightly dance performances and yoga studios. The compact centre is walkable, with the Sacred Monkey Forest and Ubud Market close by and rice terraces to the north-east around Tegallalang. Roads into town are often congested.

Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS), Indonesia's second-busiest, lies about 13 km south of Denpasar between Kuta and Jimbaran. Taxis, pre-booked transfers and the ride-hailing apps Grab and Gojek are the usual ways to reach your accommodation; Ubud, in the centre of the island, is about an hour by road from Denpasar.
Public transport is limited. Trans Metro Dewata and Trans Sarbagita buses serve greater Denpasar and parts of the south, and tourist shuttles such as Kura-Kura Bus link resort areas with Ubud. Bluebird is the largest metered taxi company. Many long-stay visitors rent a scooter, but traffic in Canggu, Kuta and Ubud is slow, and short distances can take a long time.
Choose your base by routine: Canggu suits those who want cafés and a ready-made digital-nomad scene, Sanur's beachfront path makes daily walks and cycling easy, and Ubud suits a quieter rhythm built around yoga and the arts. Whichever you pick, check how far the nearest shops are on foot, as pavements and traffic make short walks harder than they look on a map.
Plan around Nyepi, the Balinese Day of Silence, usually in March. The airport closes for the whole day, streets and beaches empty, and many ATMs are switched off, so stock up on cash and food beforehand. The night before, villages parade ogoh-ogoh effigies. If you are also working in Java, see our Jakarta page or the wider Indonesia hub.
The dry season runs from about June to September, with lower humidity, while the wet season, roughly December to March, brings heavy afternoon showers. April, May, October and November fall between the two seasons.
Annual events include Nyepi (usually March), the International Kite Festival near Sanur in July, and the Ubud Writers & Readers Festival in October. Galungan, a ten-day festival celebrating the defeat of the tyrant Mayadenawa, recurs every 210 days on the Balinese calendar.
Most visitors stay in South Bali – Kuta, Seminyak, Canggu, Jimbaran, Nusa Dua and Sanur, the most visited part of the island – or inland in Ubud, regarded as its cultural centre. This page covers the whole island hub; each area below has a distinct pace, so it pays to match the base to the trip. For background, see how an aparthotel compares with a hotel.

Seminyak suits couples who want restaurants and stylish bars, Canggu suits surfers and remote workers, Sanur suits families and longer stays, and Ubud is the base for culture and wellness.
Ngurah Rai Airport sits between Kuta and Jimbaran. Most people use metered taxis, ride-hailing apps such as Grab or Gojek, or a pre-booked transfer; in Canggu, many places arrange airport pick-ups because taxis are scarce.
Many people spend weeks or months here. Canggu is known for digital nomads, Ubud for a slower pace, and apartment-style stays with kitchens make long visits easier.
Nyepi, the Day of Silence (usually in March), closes the airport for the whole day and the island's streets and beaches fall silent. Hotels and apartments remain open, but plan food and cash in advance.
