Ocho Rios, known to locals as Ochi, is a resort town on Jamaica's north coast in the parish of Saint Ann, and its spread-out layout makes aparthotels and serviced apartments a practical choice. Development stretches along the coast rather than clustering in one place, so a base with a kitchen and space for a family or a group, and the option to self-cater, lets you pick your own pace around the waterfalls, gardens and beaches.

The town centre has duty-free shopping, the cruise piers and Island Village, a large shopping and entertainment complex. The main pier is nearest downtown, while the so-called James Bond pier further west is industrial. Wikivoyage lists United Supermarket downtown for basic groceries, and there are seven craft markets in and around the town.

Dunn's River Falls lie 3.2 km west of the town centre and mark the western edge of the built-up coast. The falls cascade over about 900 feet in a series of terraces, and the park has a private beach. Mystic Mountain, with its chairlift and 'bobsled' ride, is about 2 km west of the centre and is popular with cruise passengers.
Mammee Bay is a suburb of Ocho Rios and the northern terminus of Highway 2000, which since 2016 has cut the drive to Kingston from over two hours to a little under an hour. The highway has also taken a great deal of traffic off the old route through the town and Fern Gully.
Almost all development outside the centre is to the east, towards the White River. Tower Isle is where Wikivoyage places Harmony Hall, a Victorian gingerbread house outside Ocho Rios with Jamaican artwork and handicrafts, close to Reggae Beach.
Most visitors arrive via Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, 97 km west of Ocho Rios; the North Coast Highway has been improved since 2007 and the drive is now about an hour and 45 minutes. Ian Fleming International Airport is much closer, 17 km east of the town. Cruise ships dock at one of two piers, and several companies offer private transfers from Montego Bay.
Within town and along the coast, Wikivoyage says route taxis are everywhere and minibuses go around the island from transport centres. The built-up coast measures about 6.4 km between Dunn's River Falls and the White River. Fern Gully, a 4.8 km gorge with over 540 varieties of ferns, lies on the old route towards Kingston.
The Jamaica Villa Association, formed in 1968, represents a large number of villas on the island, and Ocho Rios has seen the rise of luxury villas with beach, ocean and mountain views. Wikivoyage mentions steamed fish at Fishermen's Beach, and United Supermarket downtown stocks basic groceries for self-catering.
Beyond sightseeing, there are seven craft markets in and around the town, and Harmony Hall near Tower Isle. If you are relocating for work, our relocation guide is a good place to start; see what an aparthotel is for how apartment-style stays work.
Jamaica's Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, and the Meteorological Service of Jamaica's Climate Services Manager describes August, September and October as the primary rainfall season.
Cruise ships visit Ocho Rios all year round, which means the main attractions can be crowded on ship days; Wikivoyage advises going early or avoiding Mystic Mountain on those days.
The town grew from a fishing village into a destination with duty-free shopping, a cruise-ship terminal, several beaches and a string of resorts and villas. It had an estimated 16,671 residents in 2011, around 10 per cent of Saint Ann's population. Our Jamaica hub covers the rest of the island, and Montego Bay is the main gateway for most visitors.
