10 stays · 6 aparthotels and 4 serviced apartments
Almaty is Kazakhstan's largest city, set against the Trans-Ili Alatau mountains, and aparthotels and serviced apartments suit it well. Visitors often combine city sightseeing with days in the mountains, or stay for business and relocation, and a flat with a kitchen, laundry and a separate bedroom is more comfortable over a week or more than a single room. Groups heading to the ski slopes in winter also benefit from the extra space.

Almaly is one of the eight official city districts listed by Wikipedia. Panfilov Park, which Wikipedia says holds the Ascension Cathedral and the Park of 28 Panfilov Guardsmen monument, is a good anchor for sightseeing. Wikipedia describes the cathedral as 56 metres high, completed in 1907 from blue Tien Shan spruce. The Green Bazaar, a traditional market, is another landmark in this part of the city.

Wikipedia describes Kok Töbe as a hilltop recreation area with views of the city and the surrounding mountains. It is east of the centre on the map. It suits visitors who want a base closer to the foothills than the central grid.
Wikipedia says Medeu is an outdoor skating rink in a mountain valley on the south-eastern outskirts at 1,691 metres, with 10,500 square metres of ice. Shymbulak, about 25 kilometres south of the city centre, is reached by gondola from Medeu. A base here suits ski-focused stays, though you will be further from the city sights.
Wikivoyage says Almaty International Airport is 15 kilometres north-east of the centre. It lists bus 92 from inside the terminal, buses 79 and 86 from Mailin Street outside, and taxis booked at the arrivals booth. For rail, it names Almaty-2 Railway Station for mainline trains, including services from Astana and Tashkent, and Sayran Bus Station for long-distance coaches. Check current timetables before you travel.
Wikipedia says the Almaty Metro opened on 1 December 2011 and has 11 stations on a single line, with extensions in 2015 and 2022 and trains running from 6:20 to midnight. It says metro payment has also been possible with the ONAI card system since 2016, and Wikivoyage mentions the Onay card and app for buses. Wikivoyage also mentions booking taxis via Yandex.
For longer stays, choose an area by the way you will travel. The metro runs on one line, so a base near a station helps for regular journeys, while Medeu and Shymbulak are better for days in the mountains. The Visit Almaty site lists activities such as hiking, horseback riding and paragliding, which fill weekends well.
Wikipedia lists the Green Bazaar among Almaty's key landmarks, and it is a useful place for fresh produce if you plan to cook. The Visit Almaty site also lists museums, monuments, lakes and waterfalls. For help comparing formats, read aparthotel vs hotel and what is included in a serviced apartment.
Wikipedia describes a humid continental climate with an annual average of 10 degrees Celsius, a January average of minus 4.7 and a July average of 23.8 degrees, and annual precipitation of about 650 to 700 millimetres. Wikivoyage says the best times to visit are April to May, which can be wet, and September to October.
Wikipedia says Shymbulak's ski season runs from November to April, with snow bases typically 1.5 to 1.8 metres, and that it is regarded as the largest ski resort in Central Asia. Summer reaches around 30 degrees in the city, according to Wikivoyage, so the mountains are a cooler escape.
Wikipedia says Almaty is the most populous city in Kazakhstan, with an estimated 2.35 million residents in January 2026, and that it remained the national capital until the move to Astana in 1997.
