London is enormous, and the neighbourhood you choose shapes every day of your trip. Aparthotels and serviced apartments in London give you a kitchen, a separate living space and room for luggage — useful for families seeing the sights, for project teams working in the City or Canary Wharf, and for anyone on a relocation or a stay of several weeks who would rather shop at a local market than eat out every night. A largely residential district of north-west central London, known for Little Venice, its canal and houseboats. Paddington station is the terminus of the Heathrow Express and a key Elizabeth line stop, with Bakerloo, Circle, District and Hammersmith & City line connections. The Regent's Canal towpath leads east to Camden and Islington.
Stays in or near Paddington and Maida Vale
Well-heeled districts in west central London around the main shopping streets of Oxford Street, Bond Street, Regent Street and Savile Row, with Hyde Park to the south-west and Regent's Park to the north. Everything in the West End is within walking distance.
Stays in or near Marylebone and Mayfair
An affluent inner district home to the great museums, famous department stores, Hyde Park and the King's Road. It is particularly good for families, with the museum quarter on the doorstep and the Piccadilly line running direct to Heathrow.
Stays in or near South Kensington and Chelsea
Bloomsbury's elegant garden squares and literary history sit next to the British Museum and the universities. To the north, King's Cross and St Pancras are the hub for trains to the north and Eurostar to the Continent, and the Tube network fans out in every direction.
Stays in or near Bloomsbury and King's Cross
London's original core within the Roman walls and one of the world's leading financial centres, where modern skyscrapers stand beside medieval churches on ancient street layouts. Liverpool Street is a major Elizabeth line interchange, and the East End's Spitalfields and Petticoat Lane markets are close by.
Stays in or near City of London
The Docklands business district in the East End, linked to Paddington, the City and Heathrow by the Elizabeth line. London City Airport, with short-haul flights to major European cities, is about 3.5 miles away and reached by the Docklands Light Railway.
Stays in or near Canary Wharf
From Heathrow, the Heathrow Express runs non-stop to Paddington in 15 minutes; the Elizabeth line follows the same route more slowly but continues across central London to the City and Canary Wharf; and the Piccadilly line serves every terminal and takes about an hour to King's Cross St Pancras, though many central stations lack step-free access. Gatwick and Stansted also have express trains, including the Gatwick Express to Victoria, but slower stopping services are usually better value. London City Airport is served by the DLR.
Pay for the Tube, buses, DLR, Overground and Elizabeth line with a contactless bank card, phone or Oyster card; daily spending is capped automatically, and you must touch in and out with the same device. The Night Tube runs on selected lines on Friday and Saturday nights. Santander Cycles, the city's bike hire scheme, and the canal towpaths are good alternatives for shorter trips.
For stays of more than a week, ask about a weekly or longer Travelcard, which can be loaded on to an Oyster card. If you use a foreign contactless card, register it on a TfL online account so you can check for incomplete journeys or declined payments.
Pack layers and a waterproof whatever the season: about one day in three brings some rain. Winter daylight is short, with darkness by about 15:45 in December, while summer days run from before 05:00 to after 21:00. In September, children return to school at the start of the month and some attractions become quieter. Read our relocation guide if you are moving to London for work.
London's climate is mild. Summer brings the longest days, with July and August highs averaging about 23.5°C, though weather can be changeable. Spring is variable and can be wet; autumn is often the wettest and windiest season but can bring warm spells into October; and winter highs average around 8°C, with occasional snow that disrupts transport.
Big annual events include the London Marathon, usually in April, and the Notting Hill Carnival over the August bank holiday weekend. Mid-autumn is a good time to walk the tree-filled parks as the leaves turn. Exploring further afield? Browse our other cities in England, such as Manchester.
The capital splits into distinct districts. The West End and Westminster hold the theatres, shops and government buildings; the City of London is the historic financial centre inside the old Roman walls; Canary Wharf in the Docklands is the newer business hub; and residential districts such as Paddington, Marylebone and South Kensington offer quieter streets close to the parks.
