Aparthotels & serviced apartments in Tangier

27 stays · 27 aparthotels and 0 serviced apartments

Tangier sits on the southern shore of the Strait of Gibraltar, close enough to Spain that the far coast is visible on a clear day. It is Morocco's third-largest city, a major port and the country's second industrial centre after Casablanca, so aparthotels and serviced apartments in Tangier suit engineers and managers working at the port and free zones as much as holidaymakers. A kitchen and separate living space make sense for longer stays, for families, and for anyone using the city as a base for day trips along the coast.

Where to stay in Tangier

Medina & Kasbah

  • culture
  • first-time visitors
  • short stays

The Medina is compact by Moroccan standards but still a maze of alleys around the Grand Mosque, the Petit Socco and the souks. Its north-western corner is the Kasbah, where the old Dar el-Makhzen palace is now a museum of Moroccan arts. Much of it is reachable only on foot; going downhill leads to the port, uphill to the Grand Socco and the new town.

Ville Nouvelle

  • business travel
  • long stays
  • dining

The new town around Boulevard Pasteur and Boulevard Mohammed V is the commercial centre, with banks, cafés, pharmacies and clothes shops. The Terrasse des Paresseux looks out over the strait, and the Gran Teatro Cervantes, built in 1913, recalls the Spanish influence on the city. It is a short walk from both the Medina and the beach.

Marshan

  • quiet stays
  • sea views
  • couples

Marshan is a residential plateau stretching west of downtown along the sea, home to the Marshan Palace, the Mendoub's Residence and the clifftop Café Hafa. It is calmer than the Medina next door, and the road west leads on to Cape Spartel and the Caves of Hercules.

Corniche & Marina Bay

  • beach
  • nightlife
  • families

Avenue Mohammed VI follows the city beach from the port towards Malabata, lined with hotels, bars, restaurants and cafés; the beach was cleaned up and refurbished as part of the city's redevelopment. The Marina Bay area and the Tangier Ville ferry terminal are at the port end, below the Medina.

Malabata

  • beach
  • long stays
  • families

The eastern end of the bay, known as Malabata, is where the beachfront Avenue Mohammed VI and its hotels, cafés and restaurants run out towards the headland of Cape Malabata. It is quieter than the port end of the corniche, and the Tanger Ville railway station is on the eastern outskirts of the city, about 2 km from the Medina.

Getting around Tangier

Tangier Ibn Battouta Airport is 15 km south-west of the city centre, with flights from Western Europe and other Moroccan cities. Alsa's AE airport bus links the terminal with the Tanger Ville railway station via stops including Complexe Hassani, Ben Dibane and Nejma; it runs roughly hourly and tickets are bought on board. Grand taxis wait at the arrivals exit with fixed fares by destination.

ONCF runs trains from Tanger Ville station, including the Al Boraq high-speed service to Casablanca via Kenitra and Rabat in about two hours. Ferries from Tarifa cross in about an hour to the Tangier Ville port beside the Medina; ferries from Algeciras use Tanger Med, a separate port about 40 km outside the city.

The centre is compact and walking is the best way to get around it. Turquoise petits taxis are metered for trips within the city (agree a fare if there is no meter), while cream grands taxis are shared and needed for journeys beyond the city limits. Alsa's green city buses cover the suburbs, although some lines run infrequently.

Living in Tangier for longer

Fresh food is sold at the Medina souk, which deals mainly in vegetables and clothes as well as tourist goods, and Casa Barata is a large market about 6 km outside the city. Bargaining is normal in the souks, and it helps to negotiate in dirham rather than euros. Many expatriate residents speak Spanish first, then English and French.

Taxi drivers know the districts by local names rather than the guidebook ones: the beach is "Playa", the port "Marsa", the Medina "souk barra" and the hilly western residential area "California". For a first long stay, our guide to what an aparthotel is explains what is usually included.

When to visit Tangier

Tangier has a Mediterranean climate with heavier rain than most of North Africa, as north-west Morocco is the wettest part of the country. Summers are relatively hot and sunny, with July and August almost dry and average highs around 28°C, while winters are mild and wet, with November and December the rainiest months. Facing the Atlantic, the city is usually a couple of degrees cooler than the Spanish side of the strait.

Summer weekends and major holidays are the busiest times at the ferry ports, when crossings can be crowded. The Tanjazz jazz festival is held in September (its 23rd edition ran from 18 to 20 September 2026), and the drier months from May to October suit walking the Medina and day trips to Asilah, Tetouan and Chefchaouen.

The city rises like an amphitheatre around the Bay of Tangier, with the kasbah on the western hill and Cape Malabata to the east. High-speed trains run south to Rabat and Casablanca, and overnight trains to Marrakech; see our Morocco page for other cities.
