Wikipedia says Thamel has been the centre of Kathmandu's tourist industry for over four decades and describes narrow alleys crowded with shops, travel agencies, small grocery stores, restaurants, pubs and trekking-gear shops. It calls Thamel a pre-base camp for mountaineers. Wikipedia says Durbar Square is about 1.4 kilometres to the south. It is busy, with cars, rickshaws and taxis sharing narrow streets, but it is the most convenient base for arranging treks and tours.

Wikipedia lists Durbar Square among Kathmandu's World Heritage Sites, and Wikivoyage describes it as the centre of Hindu culture and of many of Nepal's festivals. The official city site features Kathmandu Durbar Kshetra among its heritage images. Staying nearby puts the old city on your doorstep, though Wikivoyage warns that walking around town is not always pleasant given crowds, narrow lanes and traffic.

Wikivoyage says Boudha and Swayambhu are famous for Buddhist monasteries, and that most sights around the Boudhanath stupa can be reached on foot. It describes alleys packed with small shops and cafes around the stupa, and says shops selling religious items are concentrated around Boudha. Wikipedia lists Bouddha among the World Heritage Sites. It suits longer stays with a village-like routine.

Wikivoyage groups it with Boudha as a centre of Buddhist monasteries. It suits visitors who want a hilltop temple setting away from the tourist district.

Wikivoyage says Tribhuvan International Airport is on Ring Road, 5.5 km east of Thamel, and that getting to the city is possible by local bus, regular taxi, prepaid taxi or a pre-arranged hotel transfer. Wikipedia says it is the country's main international airport and connects Nepal to over 40 destinations in 17 countries, and mentions heavy traffic congestion and winter fog. Check flight status before you travel, and arrange your first night's accommodation in advance if you can.
Sajha Yatayat, a cooperative bus company, describes itself as providing public transport in Kathmandu, and Wikipedia says it runs regular bus services throughout Kathmandu and the surrounding valley, including to the airport. Wikivoyage adds that there is no train in Kathmandu, that tempos and microbuses run on predefined numbered routes, and that taxis can be hailed or booked by app, with the fare negotiated before you set off. It also notes that directions are usually given relative to a chowk or landmark rather than a street number.
For a longer stay, Wikivoyage says Bhat-Bhateni supermarkets and department stores have many stores in Kathmandu, that shopping malls are mostly in the central area, and that Thamel is home to bookshops. Wikipedia lists small grocery stores among the businesses in Thamel. Wikivoyage says traditional shops selling clothes and bags are located between New Road and Chhetrapati.
Wikivoyage recommends picking up the free Kathmandu Valley map at the airport and says most sites near the Boudha stupa can be reached on foot. For trips outside the city centre, buses, taxis and ride-hailing apps all work, and the Sajha Yatayat network covers the wider valley according to Wikipedia. Wikivoyage also lists motorbike taxis, which pick up and drop door to door.
Wikipedia describes Kathmandu's climate as humid subtropical at lower elevations and subtropical highland at higher ones, with warm days and cool nights. It says rainfall is mostly monsoon-based, with about 65% falling between June and September, and an average annual rainfall of around 1,400 mm. The average winter temperature is 10.1 °C and temperatures can fall to 0 °C or below in winter.
Wikivoyage says Dashain, the most important religious festival, takes place over fifteen days between September and October each year, and that many businesses close for it and many residents return to their villages. It lists Tihar around the end of October or start of November, Holi in March and Indra Jatra in September. Plan your dates with these closures in mind.
