Stavanger is the administrative centre of Rogaland county in south-west Norway, with around 152,000 residents in the municipality and a much larger urban area. It became Norway's oil capital after the discovery of oil in 1969, and Equinor has its headquarters here. Aparthotels and serviced apartments in Stavanger suit that mix of business and leisure travel: project and contract workers staying for weeks, and visitors who want a kitchen and extra space between days out on the Lysefjord.

Gamle Stavanger preserves wooden houses from the 18th and 19th centuries that are protected as heritage buildings. The harbour is next door, and the tourist information office sits on Strandkaien beside it, so tours and excursions are easy to arrange on arrival.

Stavanger Cathedral, completed in 1125, anchors the centre, and Wikivoyage calls it the best preserved medieval cathedral in Norway. The railway station is a short distance south, and airport and regional bus services also connect to the centre, which makes this the most practical base without a car.

East of the harbour, Fargegaten (the colourful street) is known for cafés, shops and street art, and the Norwegian Petroleum Museum stands on the waterfront nearby. The museum opened in 1999 and traces the technology of the Norwegian oil industry from the first North Sea platforms to modern subsea systems.

Mosvatnet is the lake south-west of the centre, in the Eiganes og Våland and Hillevåg area, and a residential setting away from the harbour, with the centre within reach by bus.

Solastranden, in Sola municipality, is a beach on the Jæren coast, and Wikivoyage lists surfing at Sola Beach among summer activities. Stavanger Airport at Sola is also here, which suits early departures.
Stavanger Airport, Sola, is about 15 km from the centre according to Wikivoyage; the Flybussen airport bus is listed as a public link, with local buses and taxis as alternatives. Trains run from Stavanger to Kristiansand and onward to Oslo, with local trains to Egersund; Visit Norway gives the Oslo journey as roughly eight hours. Longer stays are easiest near the centre or around Mosvatnet, where shops and bus routes are close, and a kitchen helps make the most of the supermarket shop. Days out from the city include fjord cruises and RIB tours on the Lysefjord, hikes to Preikestolen and Kjerag, and the white beaches of Jæren for surfing and kitesurfing. For a first look at Norwegian apartment stays, what is an aparthotel sets out how they differ from hotels.
Stavanger has a temperate oceanic climate shaped by the North Sea. Wikipedia records annual precipitation of about 1,256 mm, and Wikivoyage describes a mild, humid Atlantic climate with less rain than Bergen, so waterproofs are useful at any time of year.
Summer suits hiking, kayaking and beach days. Preikestolen is more difficult in winter and spring because of snow and ice, and it is sometimes not possible to reach the top in winter. Gladmat, the city's annual food festival, and the biennial Offshore Northern Seas conference are among the events Wikipedia mentions; check the organisers' calendars for current dates.
The compact centre is built around the harbour and Old Stavanger, and the fjords, islands and Jæren beaches are all within reach of the city. For other Norwegian stays, see our Oslo and Tromsø guides, or the wider Norway overview.
