Tromsdalen lies on the mainland across the bridge and is where the Arctic Cathedral, a modern church built in 1965, and the cable car are found. Wikipedia says the cable car climbs 420 metres to panoramic views, which makes this a good base if you plan to ride it more than once.

North of the centre on Tromsøya is the University of Tromsø, which Wikipedia calls the world's northernmost university. The airport coach also serves the University and University Hospital of North Norway, according to Wikipedia's airport entry, so this area works for anyone visiting for study, research or hospital business.

Getting around Tromsø

Tromsø Airport is on the western shore of Tromsøya, 5 km and ten minutes by road from the city centre, according to Wikipedia. An airport coach runs into the centre, and Wikivoyage calls it Flybussen, noting that it goes straight into the town centre with only a few hotel stops. Wikipedia also lists city bus lines 24, 26, 40 and 42 serving the airport, plus taxis and car rental at Langnes.

The compact centre is within walking distance of most sights, and Wikivoyage describes the buses as plentiful and generally running until midnight. Visit Tromsø lists the Svipper app for journey planning and tickets. It also says the Tromsø Bridge is closed to ordinary vehicle traffic from 17 August to 1 November 2026, with buses diverted through the Tromsøysund Tunnel between 17:00 and 07:00, so check the app for current routes to Tromsdalen. Wikivoyage also notes that driving from Oslo is around 1,700 km via the E6.

Living in Tromsø for longer

Because the island is small, a stay near Storgata lets you handle most everyday errands on foot, with restaurants and shops concentrated along the street. For a longer stay linked to study or hospital visits, the University area north of the centre is served by the airport coach.

Light changes dramatically through the year, which affects daily routines. Wikipedia gives the polar night as 28 November to 14 January and the midnight sun as above the horizon from 19 May to 27 July, so it is worth planning your days around the available daylight. Wikivoyage names December to mid or late March as the best viewing period, and says the sun is below the horizon from 26 November to 15 January. Wikipedia lists the polar night as 28 November to 14 January.

Winter runs from November to April on Visit Tromsø's calendar, with dog sledding, ski touring, skiing, snowshoeing and Sami culture experiences, while hiking and kayaking are listed among the summer activities and whale watching is listed for November to January.
