San Juan splits into very different pieces: a walled colonial old town on a small island, a strip of high-rise beachfront in Condado and Isla Verde, and residential districts such as Ocean Park and Santurce in between. Aparthotels and serviced apartments in San Juan make most sense in the beach districts, where a kitchen and a living area help with week-long family stays and with longer visits by remote workers or business travellers.
Old San Juan is the colonial walled district. San Juan National Historic Site preserves the forts of Castillo San Felipe del Morro and Castillo San Cristobal, and the National Park Service describes the site as a World Heritage Site. Wikivoyage says it is a real town where people live and work rather than a beach resort, and that its cobbled one-way streets are hard to drive or park in.

Condado lies about 2 miles (3.2 km) east of Old San Juan, according to Wikipedia, and is one of the subbarrios of Santurce. Its main road is Ashford Avenue, and the district mixes high-rise condominiums and hotels with converted historic houses that now serve as small inns, shops and restaurants. Wikivoyage says bus T21 crosses the bridge from Puerta de Tierra to Ashford Avenue.

Ocean Park sits between Condado and Isla Verde. Wikipedia describes a quiet residential district of single-family homes from the 1930s to 1950s with guest houses and small inns, and a calm shore where offshore reefs keep large waves away. Strong seasonal onshore trade winds make it popular with kitesurfers and windsurfers. It suits a beach base away from the hotel towers.

Santurce is the wider district that contains Condado and Ocean Park, and Wikivoyage describes it, together with Hato Rey, as a very active economic area. The Tren Urbano rapid transit line starts at the Sagrado Corazon station in southern Santurce. Wikivoyage's T5 bus route links Isla Verde and the airport to Old San Juan via Miramar, a mostly residential area separated from Condado by the Condado Lagoon.

Isla Verde is in the municipality of Carolina, east of central San Juan. Wikipedia describes it as an urbanised beachfront resort, commercial and residential area with upscale hotels and condominiums, and says the airport is located here. Wikivoyage says buses T5 and D53 run from Puerta de Tierra through parts of Condado to Isla Verde and the airport. See our Carolina page for stays on that side of the boundary.

Luis Munoz Marin International Airport is in the neighbouring municipality of Carolina, according to Wikipedia. Wikivoyage says most travellers take a taxi or rent a car, and that taxis between the main tourist zones use fixed rates. Check the current rates with the taxi association, as they change. Wikivoyage describes the city bus service as infrequent and unpredictable, and says buses do not go into Old San Juan itself but end at the Covadonga terminal near a cruise pier.
The Tren Urbano is a single rapid transit line of about 10.7 miles that, according to Wikivoyage, does not link Old San Juan, Condado or the airport, so it suits few visitors. The Cataño ferry crosses San Juan Bay between Old San Juan and Cataño in roughly 12 to 15 minutes. Wikivoyage advises that the sights of Old San Juan are within walking distance of each other, though hills, heat and cobbles make it tiring in the afternoon.
For a longer stay, choose where you want to spend your days. Condado and Ocean Park put you beside the beach, while Isla Verde is close to the airport. Wikivoyage notes that there are no public buses connecting San Juan with the rest of the island, only shared vans called guaguas, so renting a car for a few days is the usual way to explore beyond the capital.
Our guide on serviced apartments for relocation lists what to check when you are moving for work, and the Puerto Rico page covers other destinations on the island.
San Juan has a tropical monsoon climate with an average temperature of 27.2 degrees Celsius, about 56 inches of rain across 161 days a year and 2,970 hours of sunshine, according to Wikipedia. Wikivoyage gives winter daytime highs of 21 to 24 degrees and summer highs of 29 to 32 degrees, and says afternoon rain and thunderstorms are common from April to November.
Hurricane season runs from July to November according to Wikivoyage, and Wikipedia notes the lasting impact of Hurricane Maria in September 2017. If you travel in that period, check forecasts and your booking's change terms.
Choosing a district matters more than choosing a building. Wikivoyage describes San Juan as the capital and largest city of Puerto Rico, with 342,000 people in the municipality and about 2.2 million in the metropolitan area, founded in 1521 and the oldest city under US jurisdiction. The sections below compare five areas and explain how to move between them. If you are new to the format, our guide explains what an aparthotel is.
