Brasov sits in central Transylvania, surrounded by the Southern Carpathians, with a medieval Old Town at the foot of Mount Tampa. Aparthotels and serviced apartments in Brasov suit the way people use the city: as a base for several days of walking, day trips into the mountains, winter ski weeks at nearby Poiana Brasov, or a longer work stay where a kitchen and a washing machine matter more than a restaurant breakfast. Families and small groups also tend to find the extra living space easier than two separate hotel rooms.

The walled medieval centre is built around Council Square (Piata Sfatului) and holds the Gothic Black Church, dating from 1477, as well as the White Tower, Black Tower and the Brasov Citadel, according to Wikivoyage. Almost everything a short-stay visitor wants is within walking distance.

Wikivoyage describes Livada Postei as the north edge of the Old Town and a key interchange for the local RATBV buses, which makes it a practical address for people who will not be walking everywhere. You are only minutes from Council Square on foot, yet shops and everyday services sit around you rather than souvenir stalls.

Schei is the historic Romanian quarter south of the Old Town, with St Nicholas Church and the museum of the First Romanian School. Bus 4 links it to the Old Town and the railway station, as listed by Wikivoyage.

Brasov railway station is one of the busiest in Romania, and a stay nearby suits anyone arriving from Bucharest by train or leaving early for a connection. The Old Town is a bus ride away on line 4, so you trade the atmosphere of the centre for simple logistics. Large supermarkets are on the edges of town rather than in the centre.

This mountain resort lies about 12 km from the city at roughly 1,020 metres above sea level, according to Wikipedia. The ski area rises to 1,799 metres and has gondola, chairlift and ski-lift systems, plus snow cannons on most slopes. In summer the same lifts serve hiking trails, though you will need the bus or a car for supermarket runs and anything urban.
Brasov-Ghimbav International Airport opened to flights on 15 June 2023 and lies in Ghimbav, just outside the city. The A1 express bus, operated by RATBV, links it to the city centre in about 20 to 25 minutes, with departures coordinated with flights. Bucharest Otopeni airport is about 160 km to the south and is also a common arrival point, with direct buses and trains to Brasov, according to Wikivoyage.
Wikivoyage reports about 13 direct trains a day from Bucharest, taking roughly 2 hours 40 minutes, as well as coach services to Sibiu, Cluj-Napoca and Bucharest.
Inside the city the RATBV bus network is the main public transport. Wikivoyage names Livada Postei as the key interchange and lists bus 4 for the station, Old Town and Schei and bus 20 for Poiana Brasov. The Old Town itself is compact and best covered on foot, and Wikivoyage lists a cable car up Tampa mountain.
Wikivoyage lists Carrefour, Metro and Kaufland on the edges of town, and the Astra market for local produce, so a longer stay with a kitchen is easy to stock. The largest shopping centre it names is Coresi, with Eliana and STAR also listed. Staying inside the Old Town is atmospheric, but a base nearer Livada Postei or the station area puts you closer to everyday services and buses.
The mountain setting shapes daily life: Wikivoyage warns that Brasov is often wet and cold, especially at night, so pack layers even outside winter. A flat with a washing machine and a drying space is genuinely useful for hikers and ski groups. The city's official site publishes an events calendar and a public transport map, both in Romanian, which are worth bookmarking if you plan to stay for several weeks.
Wikipedia gives the humid continental climate monthly averages as ranging from -2.0 degrees C in January to 20.2 degrees C in July, with extremes of 37.3 degrees C on 5 July 2000 and -33.3 degrees C on 8 January 2015. That makes winter properly cold and summer comfortable for walking, with mountain weather able to turn quickly.
Poiana Brasov's ski season typically runs from mid-November to mid-March, around 120 days, although snow can fall from the end of September. For hiking and sightseeing, the warmer months are the easiest. Check the city's official events calendar for what is on during your dates rather than relying on older guidebook listings.
The municipality had 237,589 residents at the 2021 census, which makes it the sixth most populous city in Romania, so there is a proper supermarket, market and transport network behind the postcard centre. If you are planning a wider trip, compare Brasov with Bucharest, about 166 km to the south, or with Cluj-Napoca, and see everything listed across Romania. For ski stays, look at Poiana Brasov directly.
