Historic centre and Nevsky Prospekt

  • first-time visitors
  • sightseeing
  • culture

Between the Neva and the Obvodny Canal, and crossed by the Fontanka and Moika rivers, the centre holds the Hermitage and the city's main avenue, Nevsky Prospekt, lined with late 18th- and 19th-century architecture. Being on the south bank means the night-time bridge openings will not strand you, and Moskovsky railway station faces Nevsky Prospekt at Uprising Square.

Vasilievsky Island

  • students
  • long stays
  • history

The eastern end of Vasilievsky Island has long been the centre of the city's academic life, with fine 18th-century buildings and the Spit, an early 19th-century ensemble facing the Hermitage. It is quieter than the centre, but at certain times of night it cannot be reached at all while the bridges are up.

Petrograd Side

  • architecture
  • parks

The city was founded here in 1703, at the Peter and Paul Fortress. The rest of the borough was largely built up in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and is rich in buildings of that period, while the islands to its north-west are green recreation areas.

Southern St. Petersburg is known for its industrial architecture and grand Stalin-era buildings along Moskovsky Prospekt. Moskovskaya metro station is the terminus of the express airport buses and on line 2 straight into the centre, which makes this area practical for early flights.

Getting around St. Petersburg

Pulkovo Airport is linked by bus to Moskovskaya metro station on line 2, including the 39E express, and by bus 82 to Prospekt Veteranov on line 1; buses run from early morning until after 1am. Use the official airport taxi desk or a booked car rather than accepting offers from touts.

The St. Petersburg Metro has six lines and 75 stations, connecting all five main railway terminals. Stations are very deep, so allow time for the escalators, and the system closes from about 12.15am to 5.45am. Station names are shown in Latin script, though announcements are in Russian. Buses, trams and trolleybuses fill in the gaps, and the Podorozhnik smart card, sold at metro ticket desks, covers them all.

Living in St. Petersburg for longer

Buy a Podorozhnik card early: it is the easiest and cheapest way to pay for the metro, trams, trolleybuses and many buses, and you can load passes onto it. Avoid travelling with luggage in the rush hour, when trains are extremely crowded.

If you stay across the river, check the bridge schedule: between April and November the nine drawbridges over the Neva are raised for river traffic for several hours each night, with short breaks when some are lowered. In winter, snow and ice can make pavements slippery, so pack good boots and watch for icicles falling from roofs.

When to visit St. Petersburg

St. Petersburg has a humid continental climate with short, mild to warm summers, when July averages highs of around 23°C, and long, cold, wet winters, with snow cover from about November to early April. At 60°N, days are under six hours long in late December but it never gets fully dark in June.

Peak season is the White Nights in June, when the city's festival season fills accommodation, so book early. May 9 brings Victory Day parades, and New Year is the biggest holiday of the year. November to March is quiet, with short queues at the Hermitage.

Location matters more than usual here: from spring to late autumn the bridges over the Neva are raised at night, which can cut the islands off from the centre for hours. For Russia's capital, see Moscow, or browse the Russia hub.
