Getting around Kigali

Kigali International Airport is at Kanombe, about 5 km east of the central business district by road. Taxis and buses to Remera, the city centre and Nyabugogo serve the terminal; a larger replacement airport is under construction at Bugesera.

City buses are cashless: you pay with a rechargeable Tap&Go card, and long-distance buses and share taxis leave from Nyabugogo. Motorcycle taxis (motos) are the quickest way to get around the hills, while the Move and Yego apps book cars, and Yego books motos too. Kigali is safe to walk, but the hills are steep, so plan walks around the contours.

Living in Kigali for longer

Kimironko market, in the east of the city, sells fruit, vegetables, rice and other staples alongside second-hand clothing, and the Kigali Cultural Village showcases local artisans and food vendors.

On the last Saturday morning of each month, residents take part in Umuganda, a community work morning, so plan errands around it. Car-free days are held on the first and third Sundays of the month, when some central roads close to motor traffic for walking and cycling.

When to visit Kigali

At about 1,570 m above sea level, Kigali has a mild climate, with average daily highs of about 26–28°C and lows around 16°C all year. There are two rainy seasons, from February to June and from September to December, with April the wettest month, typically bringing over 150 mm of rain.

Because temperatures barely change through the year, the rainfall pattern is the main thing to plan around, whether you are in the city for meetings or heading on to other parts of Rwanda.

The city is known for its clean, tree-lined boulevards and safe streets, and its neighbourhoods each sit on their own hill, so choosing the right one matters. For more on longer moves, read our guide to serviced apartments for relocation, or see how aparthotels compare with hotels.
