Dakar sits on the Cap-Vert peninsula, which Wikipedia describes as the westernmost point of mainland Africa, and the city spreads along that coast in a string of very different districts. Aparthotels and serviced apartments in Dakar suit this layout well: a kitchen and a separate living area make a stay of a week or more easier, families get extra space, and people working in the city for a few weeks can pick a district that matches their daily routine rather than a single central hotel. If the format is new to you, our guide explains what an aparthotel is.
Wikipedia names Dakar-Plateau as the historical heart of the city, where most ministries and public administrations are located, and Wikivoyage lists Marché Sandaga and Marché Kermel under the city centre. Wikivoyage describes Sandaga as a market on three levels, with meat and vegetable stalls, fish in the basement and restaurant stalls on the roof. Wikipedia says Gorée Island is connected to the mainland by a ferry of about 30 minutes, and puts the island about two kilometres from the main harbour of Dakar. Wikivoyage says the TER runs from the central railway station in the city centre.
Wikivoyage places Les Almadies at the western tip of the peninsula and notes plenty of seafood restaurants there. It is one of the four arrondissements Wikipedia lists for the city, so it is a named administrative area rather than just a tourist label. Expect to rely on taxis or ride-hailing for most trips to the centre, since the area sits well away from the TER line.
Wikivoyage lists Ngor with Ouakam, Yoff and Hann as the original Lebou villages that are still distinctly Lebou neighbourhoods. Wikipedia says the Île de N'Gor lies off the northern shore of the N'Gor commune, with beaches that offer surfing, and Wikivoyage describes a boat ride of about five minutes to the island. It is a calmer base than the centre for visitors who prefer a coastal setting and are happy to travel for sightseeing.
Ouakam is another of the Lebou villages Wikivoyage names. Wikipedia says the Deux Mamelles, twin hills and the only high ground in the city, are in Ouakam commune, with a lighthouse on the first hill and the African Renaissance Monument, considered the tallest statue in Africa, on the second. It suits travellers who want a residential street scene rather than a tourist strip.
Wikivoyage lists the Mamelles lighthouse, with views over the ocean and the city skyline, and describes the Plage des Mamelles just below it as one of Dakar's most popular sandy beaches, with big waves to watch out for. Wikipedia lists the Deux Mamelles twin hills among Dakar's landmarks. It suits visitors who want a beach on the western side of the peninsula and do not mind a taxi or ride-hailing trip to reach the centre.

Blaise Diagne International Airport is about 43 km east of downtown Dakar, near the town of Diass, according to Wikipedia; Wikivoyage gives the distance as about 50 km. Wikipedia says the Train Express Régional (TER) links the airport with Dakar: the first phase to Diamniadio opened in December 2021, the extension to the airport opened on 28 September 2026, and the journey between Dakar and the airport takes approximately 55 minutes. The Dakar terminus is the rehabilitated 1914 station building. Wikivoyage, written before the extension opened, also mentions Dakar Dem Dikk buses between the airport and a Dem Dikk station in the HLM Grand Yoff neighbourhood, and taxis. The TER operator publishes its network and timetable pages at terdakar.sn, so check current services there before travelling.
Within the city, Wikivoyage lists Dakar Dem Dikk buses, cars rapides (minibuses with a fare collector), taxis, and the ride-hailing apps Heetch and Yango. It notes that taxi fares are negotiated, so agree the price before you set off. The Sunu BRT runs on dedicated lanes; Wikivoyage describes an 18 km line through central Dakar from the Grand Mosque to the Corniche. The TER is useful for the eastern suburbs and Diamniadio, but the western coast around Almadies, Ngor and Ouakam is best reached by road.
For food shopping, Wikivoyage points to Marché Sandaga in the centre, Marché Soumbedioune, which it calls a popular evening fish market, and Marché HLM, a smaller market geared mainly towards fabric vendors. If your apartment has a kitchen, fish bought at Soumbedioune and vegetables from Sandaga give you a very local weekly routine. Choose your district first by how you will travel: the centre suits people who want to reach offices, ferries and markets by TER, bus or a short taxi ride.
The western coast suits a slower pace, with seafood restaurants in Almadies and the village atmosphere of Ngor and Ouakam. A short test trip at the time of day you will normally travel is a sensible check before committing to a month-long base.
Wikivoyage says Dakar is warm and humid all year, with a rainy season from July to October. Wikipedia describes an ocean-influenced tropical hot semi-arid climate, with about 411 mm of rain a year, temperatures of roughly 25 to 28 degrees Celsius from December to May and 29 to 31 degrees from May to November. The dry season covers the months outside July to October, which makes that stretch the more predictable choice for beach days, ferry trips to Gorée and sightseeing on foot.
Gorée Island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, designated in 1978 according to Wikipedia, and the island has no cars, so visits are on foot. Pack for humidity in the rainy season.
Wikipedia divides Dakar into 19 communes d'arrondissement, grouped into four arrondissements: Almadies, Grand Dakar, Parcelles Assainies and Plateau/Gorée. For visitors, the practical choice is between the historic centre around Dakar-Plateau and the western coast around Almadies, Ngor and Ouakam. The city is the capital of Senegal, and the sections below describe the main bases, how to move between them, and what to expect through the year.
