Aparthotels and serviced apartments are a natural fit for Salou, a resort town on the Costa Daurada in Catalonia, Spain, where most visitors come for beaches and the nearby PortAventura World resort. A kitchen and separate living space help families with children, groups travelling together and anyone staying for a fortnight or more, because you can eat in when you choose and keep beach kit and laundry out of the bedroom.

Cap Salou is the headland next to La Pineda at the eastern end of the town's 9.49 km Coastal Path, which the tourist board says runs from Punta de Sant Pere to the Racó de Salou. The path ends at the lighthouse, and the tourist board places the small Crancs cove here, surrounded by vegetation. It is a base for walkers who want to be away from the central beach.

Platja dels Capellans is one of the named beaches Wikipedia lists besides Llevant and Ponent, and the tourist board counts 25 beaches and coves in Salou. It lies east of the central Llevant beach, so it suits visitors who prefer a smaller cove to the long main beach.

Getting around Salou

The closest airport is Reus, connected to Salou by a regular bus service. It is served mainly by low-cost airline Ryanair, and charter airlines from Britain use it through the summer as a gateway to the Costa Daurada. Barcelona airport is the larger international hub, about 100 km away, and Wikivoyage notes that Plana runs buses from there to Tarragona and onwards to Salou around five times a day. Wikipedia lists taxi ranks opposite the Font Lluminosa, at Cap Salou and at Reus Airport.

The former town-centre railway station closed in January 2020 after a new line between Tarragona and Amposta opened. Regional trains now stop at Salou - PortAventura station, north-east of the centre, on lines R17 (towards Tarragona and Barcelona) and RT2. Plana Bus serves Cambrils, La Pineda, PortAventura, Reus and Tarragona. The tourist board says Plana runs the Costa Daurada bus service from Cambrils to Tarragona with stops in the main streets of Salou's tourist area, and also lists a tourist train.

Living in Salou for longer

For stays of several weeks, a flat near the central streets lets you shop and cook locally while still being close to the sea. The tourist board says weekly markets operate in the town and that the schedule is available from tourist offices, including the central office on Passeig de Jaume I. Day trips to Tarragona, Reus and Cambrils are served by Plana buses, and Wikivoyage suggests Barcelona as a day trip of about two and a half hours each way.

Salou is also used for sport: it has been the base for Rally Catalunya since 2005, and three golf courses belong to the Lumine golf club. If you are relocating for work rather than leisure, our guide to serviced apartments for relocation explains what to check before booking.
