Where to stay in Barcelona

Eixample

  • first-time visitors
  • business travel
  • architecture

The Eixample was laid out by Ildefons Cerdà in the 1850s as a grid of wide streets and octagonal blocks with chamfered corners. It holds much of the city's modernista architecture and is central for shopping, restaurants and the metro. Its regular streets make it easy to navigate and comfortable for longer stays.

Barri Gòtic and El Born

  • culture
  • couples
  • nightlife

The Barri Gòtic is the medieval heart of Ciutat Vella, beside La Rambla, and El Born lies just to the east towards the sea. Narrow lanes, small squares and countless bars make it atmospheric, but it is crowded, and pickpockets work the busiest streets. Barceloneta and the beach are a short walk away.

Gràcia

  • long stays
  • local life
  • couples

Gràcia was an independent town until 1897 and still feels like one, with low-rise buildings, independent shops and small plazas. It is Barcelona's smallest district by area and one of its most densely populated. Gaudí's Park Güell and Casa Vicens are both here.

Poblenou

  • remote workers
  • beach
  • long stays

Poblenou, once known as the Catalan Manchester, has turned its old factories into lofts, galleries and studios. The Rambla del Poblenou is its main street, the beaches are close, and it sees fewer tourists than the centre. Metro lines 1 and 4 and the Trambesòs tram serve the area.

La Barceloneta

  • beach
  • families
  • seafood

La Barceloneta is the triangular former fishing and port quarter, laid out in the 18th century between Port Vell and the sea. Its narrow streets lead straight to sandy beaches, and it is known as one of the best places in the city for fresh fish and paella. The Aquarium and Port Vell are close by.

Getting around Barcelona

Josep Tarradellas Barcelona–El Prat Airport is about 15 km south-west of the centre. Metro line L9 Sud serves both terminals, Rodalies R2 Nord commuter trains also serve the airport, and the Aerobús shuttle links the terminals with the city centre. The 10-journey T-casual is not valid at the airport metro stations, although the Hola Barcelona card is.

Metro, buses, trams and Rodalies trains all belong to one integrated fare system. The T-casual card covers 10 journeys with transfers, the T-usual is a monthly pass for one person, and the Hola Barcelona card gives unlimited travel for two to five days. Most central neighbourhoods are walkable, and the Eixample's grid makes it straightforward to cover on foot.

Living in Barcelona for longer

For a month or more, the T-usual monthly pass is the simplest way to cover daily travel. Gràcia, with its independent shops and plazas, and Poblenou, with fewer tourists and the beach nearby, offer a more residential pace while staying close to the metro. Keep valuables close in crowded areas, especially on La Rambla and the metro.

When to visit Barcelona

Barcelona has a Mediterranean climate with mild winters and warm to hot summers; autumn, especially September and October, is the rainiest season. May to June and late August to October bring comfortable temperatures of around 19–23 °C, while August is hot, crowded and the most expensive month, with some local businesses closing.

Key dates include Sant Jordi on 23 April, the Festa Major de Gràcia in mid-August, the city's largest neighbourhood festival, and La Mercè around 24 September, with human towers, free concerts and fireworks. The Llum BCN light festival takes over Poblenou in February.

The city's neighbourhoods are distinct: the medieval lanes of the Barri Gòtic, the ordered grid of the Eixample, the village squares of Gràcia and the converted factories of Poblenou. For a primer on the format, read what an aparthotel is.
