Best time to visit
When is the best time to visit Portugal?
Facts checked against the cited sources on
Portugal looks small on a map but has four distinct climates: the wet, green north around Porto, the sunny south of the Algarve, a hot interior, and the Atlantic islands of Madeira and the Azores. When to go depends on which of those you want, and on whether beaches, city walking, hiking or winter warmth matters most.
The climate tables are WMO World Weather Information Service pages carrying 1961 to 1990 normals from IPMA, Portugal's meteorological institute, for five stations. Regional descriptions come from Visit Portugal and Visit Madeira, and fire-season dates from the ICNF forest agency, all read in October 2026. Our stays in Portugal are in the table below.
Portugal by season in one view
Visit Portugal describes a mild climate with 3,000 hours of sunshine a year and calls the country a holiday destination for all seasons. On the mainland winters are mild, especially in the Algarve, and colder inland in the north and centre. Summers are hot and dry, especially inland in Trás-os-Montes and the Alentejo, and slightly cooler on the coast because of the sea. Autumn often brings warm, sunny days, and the page names early November weather St. Martin's Summer.
The islands behave differently: Madeira and the Azores have pleasant conditions year-round, Visit Portugal says. The station tables below test those statements against figures for three mainland cities and one station on each archipelago.
Mainland: Lisbon, Porto and the Algarve
The mainland tables show how sharply rainfall changes from north to south. Porto records 175.6 mm in December and 170.8 in January, against 109.6 at Lisbon in January, the third-wettest month there, and 77.8 at Faro, the Algarve's gateway. In July the order is the same in reverse: Faro has 1.4 mm over 1 day, Lisbon 4.8 mm over 2 days and Porto 15.6 mm over 6 days.
Temperatures rise towards the south. August highs are 25.0 degrees Celsius at Porto, 27.9 at Lisbon and 28.8 at Faro, and January highs are 13.5, 14.5 and 16.1, so the Algarve is the warmest of the three in winter. Porto's January low of 5.1 degrees is the coolest. For a city break the figures favour Lisbon and Porto in May and September; for beach weather, the Algarve around Lagos is the driest and warmest choice from June to September.

Madeira and the Azores
Funchal in Madeira has the narrowest temperature range in this article: average highs run from 19.1 degrees Celsius in January to 25.7 in September. Rain is seasonal, though. Funchal has 102.7 mm in January and 2.5 mm in July. Visit Portugal gives Madeira averages of 24 degrees in summer and 19 in winter, with sea temperatures of 22 and 18, which is a different measure from the station highs above. Altitude matters, and Visit Madeira says higher ground can be cooler, foggy and wetter in winter.
Ponta Delgada in the Azores is cooler in summer, with a high of 25.6 in August, and much more changeable: it records between 11 rain days in August and 22 in January, and January has 133.4 mm, the most of any month. Its driest month, July, still has 29.5 mm over 13 days. The Azores suit visitors who accept showers year-round in return for mild temperatures; Visit Portugal gives no figures for them, so the station is the only guide here. For a Madeira base see Funchal.

Spring, from March to May
On the mainland spring is a good shoulder period. In May the average highs are 19.6 degrees Celsius at Porto, 21.7 at Lisbon and 22.4 at Faro, with rain of 88.6, 38.6 and 21.1 mm. March is wetter, at 111.9, 68.9 and 39.0 mm. The north is greener but still damp; the south is already dry enough for outdoor days.
Visit Madeira describes spring as mild with occasional rain keeping the vegetation green, and says the Flower Festival is held in May, with parades and live music in Funchal. It gives no dates for it. Spring is also a sensible time for hillwalking, before the summer heat inland, though the north will still deliver some rain.
Summer, heat and the fire period
Summer is the hottest and driest time on the mainland. August is the hottest month at Lisbon, Porto and Faro, and July is the driest at all three. These are averages: Visit Portugal says the interior is hotter and drier than the coast, and the Atlantic coast is cooler than inland. Visit Madeira lists long sunny days suited to swimming and natural pools, and the Madeira Wine Festival in August.
The ICNF forest agency gives 1 July to 30 September as the critical period for rural fires, citing a 2006 decree, and says the dates can be changed by an order from the minister responsible for forests; it gives 2018 (extended to 15 October) and 2019 (to 10 October) as examples. The FAQ page cites the 2006 decree and may not reflect later legal changes, so the dates in force for your year should be checked with ICNF. As an example of how a summer day can look, a government statement on 27 July 2026 reported IPMA forecasts of maximum or very high rural fire danger on the mainland and yellow heat warnings in every district except Faro, with maximum temperatures forecast up to 40 degrees Celsius in Santarém and Évora, 37 in Lisbon and 31 in Porto. That is a past example, not a forecast. Check IPMA before you travel.
Autumn, the best shoulder season
Visit Portugal says autumn often brings warm, sunny days. The station figures agree for September: highs are 24.0 degrees Celsius at Porto, 26.4 at Lisbon and 26.7 at Faro, with 64.2, 25.7 and 14.0 mm of rain. October is where the rain returns, with 131.4 mm at Porto, 80.3 at Lisbon and 66.6 at Faro, and in November Lisbon records 113.5 mm, its wettest month.
Visit Madeira says September and October remain pleasant, with the first rains arriving later in the season, and lists the Grape Harvest Festival in Câmara de Lobos in September. September is therefore the strongest shoulder month for beaches and city visits, with fewer summer crowds. Our selection of September is based on these figures and not on a ranking by any source.
Winter: mild, wet and quiet
Winter is the rainy season on the mainland. Porto has 17 rain days in January and 168.6 mm in February; Lisbon has 15 days in each of January and February. Faro is again the drier option, at 77.8 mm in January and 94.1 in December. The Algarve is the warmest mainland station, with a January high of 16.1 degrees Celsius.
Visit Portugal notes colder winters inland with some snow, mostly in the Serra da Estrela, the mainland's highest point at 1,991 m, where skiing is sometimes possible. Visit Madeira highlights Funchal's Christmas lights and the New Year's Eve fireworks over Funchal Bay, with no dates listed. Winter stays are the quiet season; a kitchen helps for a month in Lisbon, as our guide to Lisbon neighbourhoods for longer stays explains.
Best months by purpose
These pairings are our selection, not a ranking. The criteria were Visit Portugal and Visit Madeira's stated seasons and the station figures above.
- Beach weather on the mainland: June to September at Faro and Lisbon, when rain is lowest (Faro 1.4 mm in July).
- City walking: May and September, with highs of 19.6 to 26.7 degrees Celsius across the three mainland stations.
- Lowest rainfall: July at all three mainland stations and at Funchal (2.5 mm).
- Winter warmth: Madeira, with a January high of 19.1 degrees at Funchal, or the Algarve at 16.1.
- Hiking in Madeira: spring, per Visit Madeira, which also lists the Flower Festival in May.
- Snow: winter in the Serra da Estrela, per Visit Portugal.
Limits of these figures
The normals cover 1961 to 1990 and five stations, so they are a guide to pattern, not to today's climate. Interior towns such as Évora or Bragança are not shown, and Visit Portugal says they run hotter in summer and colder in winter than the coast. Rain days count from 0.1 mm. Island microclimates differ with altitude. Event months come from the Visit Madeira page and have no dates, so confirm them with the organisers.
For stays of a week or more, see when to book an aparthotel. Entry rules are not covered here; check the official Portuguese immigration website.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best month to visit Portugal?
There is no single best month. On the 1961 to 1990 normals, May and September give mainland highs of 19.6 to 26.7 degrees Celsius with less rain than winter. Visit Portugal says autumn often brings warm, sunny days. The Algarve is driest from June to September.
Is the Algarve drier than the rest of Portugal?
Yes on these stations. Faro records 77.8 mm in January against 109.6 at Lisbon and 170.8 at Porto, and 1.4 mm in July against 4.8 and 15.6 respectively.
When is the rainy season in Portugal?
On the mainland, December and January are the wettest months at Porto (175.6 and 170.8 mm) and Faro is wettest in December (94.1 mm). Lisbon is wettest in November (113.5 mm). Summer is dry, with July the driest month.
When is the fire period in Portugal?
The ICNF says the critical period for rural fires is 1 July to 30 September, and that it can be changed by an order of the minister responsible for forests; in 2018 it was extended to 15 October. Check the ICNF and IPMA for the year you travel.
What is the weather like in Madeira and the Azores?
Visit Portugal says both are pleasant all year. At Funchal the average high ranges from 19.1 degrees Celsius in January to 25.7 in September. At Ponta Delgada it ranges from 16.8 in February to 25.6 in August, with 11 to 22 rain days a month.
