Porto is Portugal's second city, built steeply above the Douro opposite the Port wine cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia, and aparthotels and serviced apartments in Porto are a natural fit for it. With a kitchen you can make use of the Bolhão market and the city's bakeries, a washing machine helps through its wet winters, and the extra space suits families and anyone staying long enough to settle into a neighbourhood.

Ribeira

  • sightseeing

The riverside quarter below the cathedral is the natural starting point for exploring the World Heritage area, with the double-deck Dom Luís I bridge leading across to Gaia. It is picturesque but steep and busy, and the Guindais funicular helps with the climb up to Batalha.

Getting around Porto

Porto Airport (Francisco Sá Carneiro) is about 15 km north-west of the centre. Metro line E (violet) runs from the airport into the city in around 30 minutes; you need a rechargeable Andante card, which is also used on the city's other metro lines. Long-distance trains to Lisbon and Coimbra leave from Campanhã, about 3 km east of the centre, while São Bento handles local and regional services.

Metro do Porto has six lines (A to F); line A reaches Matosinhos in about 30 minutes. STCP runs the buses and the historic trams, including routes 1, 18 and 22. The centre is compact but hilly, and the Guindais funicular links the riverside with the upper town.

Living in Porto for longer

The Mercado do Bolhão is the place for fresh produce, fish and meat, and buying a reloadable Andante card early saves queues at ticket machines; day passes are available too. Cedofeita and Boavista are good bases for a working stay, with everyday shops and flatter streets than the riverside.

Porto is one of the wettest major cities in Europe, with most rain falling in winter, so an apartment with heating or a dehumidifier makes a real difference from November to March. If you want the sea on your doorstep, Foz and the beaches of Matosinhos offer a calmer alternative to the centre; for more ideas, browse our Portugal destinations.

When to visit Porto

Summers are warm rather than hot, with typical temperatures of about 16–26°C and occasional spells above 30°C. Winters are mild, with afternoon temperatures up to about 15°C, but also rainy and humid, with most of the year's rain falling between autumn and spring.

The biggest event of the year is the São João festival on the night of 23–24 June, when the city celebrates its patron saint in the streets and accommodation books up early. Camellias, a symbol of the city, colour public gardens such as Parque de São Roque in late winter and early spring.

The historic centre, the Dom Luís I bridge and the Serra do Pilar monastery together form a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the metro links the airport, the centre and the coast. New to the format? Our guide to what an aparthotel is explains it; for a two-centre trip, Lisbon is under three hours away by train.
