Getting around Dubai

Dubai International Airport is the main airport, and Wikivoyage says Terminals 1 and 3 have their own Metro station. Al Maktoum International Airport is at the far south-western end of Dubai, nearly 60 km from central Dubai according to Wikivoyage. Sharjah International Airport in the neighbouring emirate also takes international flights.

Visit Dubai's official guide covers the Dubai Metro and Dubai Tram, and the airport operator says the Red Line connects with Dubai International Airport Terminals 1 and 3. Wikivoyage describes the Metro Red Line as running along the coast with stops at the airport and the Burj Khalifa, while the Green Line goes through the city core, with transfers at Union and Khalid Bin Al Waleed. It adds that the Red Line does not serve the old city centre, that most visitors still take taxis quite often, and that in summer a taxi is more practical even for getting to the nearest Metro station. Wikivoyage says nol cards for public transport can be bought at most bus stations and at Metro stations.

Living in Dubai for longer

Wikivoyage describes Downtown Dubai and the Marina as skyscraper districts, with the Metro stopping at the Burj Khalifa and the tram serving the Marina, while Jumeirah is a mix of residential and tourist areas with easy beach access. Deira and Bur Dubai are the older districts on either side of the Creek.

Wikivoyage describes Dubai as known for its large shopping malls, and notes that several have a large supermarket for self-catering. See the long-stay accommodation checklist for what to compare, and serviced apartments for relocation if you are moving to the city.

When to visit Dubai

Wikipedia classes Dubai as a hot desert climate, with summers that are extremely hot, prolonged, windy and humid, and winters that are mild to warm. August is the hottest month and January the coolest. Wikivoyage says cooler, more pleasant weather lasts from the end of September to the beginning of May, and that the heat and humidity of summer effectively rule out most outdoor activity in daylight hours.

Rain is rare. Wikivoyage says December to April generally brings the most precipitation, though little of it.

The main areas are some distance apart. This page compares five areas, explains how the Metro, tram and airports fit together, and covers the climate. For the wider picture, see the United Arab Emirates hub.
