Aparthotels & serviced apartments in Kampala

25 stays · 24 aparthotels and 1 serviced apartments

Aparthotels and serviced apartments in Kampala are a practical choice for visitors who need more than a room: a kitchen for markets and supermarket shopping, a desk for work, and space to stay for a few weeks. Kampala spreads across hills and traffic can be slow, so where you base yourself shapes your days more than in most cities.

Where to stay in Kampala

Nakasero

  • business travel
  • first-time visitors

Nakasero takes its name from Nakasero Hill, one of Kampala's original seven hills. Wikivoyage describes Nakasero Market as smaller and more pleasant than Owino, good for fruit and vegetables, which suits anyone cooking for themselves. Wikipedia also names it among the city's markets.

Kampala Central

  • markets
  • short stays

Kampala Central is one of the city's five divisions, according to Wikipedia. Wikivoyage describes Owino Market as one of the largest in this region of Africa, with a very wide range of goods, and notes that many matatus leave from around the old and new taxi parks. Expect a busy setting rather than a quiet one.

Bugolobi

  • long stays
  • business travel

Bugolobi is one of the quieter, calmer areas Wikivoyage names, and Wikipedia and Wikivoyage both place Village Mall here. It works for longer stays when you want to be away from the middle of the city; Wikivoyage lists taxis, ride-hailing apps and boda-bodas for getting around.

Ntinda

  • long stays
  • families

Ntinda is a suburban town centre with its own new market, according to Wikivoyage. It is a reasonable choice if your plans take you out to the suburbs rather than the city centre, and ride-hailing apps and boda-bodas are the usual ways to reach the centre.

Muyenga

  • long stays

Muyenga was brought inside the city boundary in 1968, according to Wikipedia. Because Kampala's roads can be slow and Wikivoyage warns that traffic jams can be every bit as bad as in Nairobi or Lagos, check how long the trip to your usual destinations takes before choosing a base this far out.

Getting around Kampala

Wikivoyage puts Entebbe International Airport 35 km south-west of Kampala. It lists several ways to reach the city: private hire taxis, fixed-time shuttle services, an airport express bus, ride-hailing apps (Uber, Bolt and Faras are named) and hotel shuttles. Ask your accommodation whether it can arrange a pick-up.

In the city, Wikivoyage lists three methods of public transport: boda-bodas (motorcycle taxis), matatus and special hires. Matatus are minibuses, known as taxis in Uganda, that follow relatively set routes between the centre and the suburbs, and app-based services such as SafeBoda, Uber, Bolt and Faras are also named. Wikivoyage describes boda-bodas as the fastest and most dangerous method.

Living in Kampala for longer

For groceries, Wikivoyage names Carrefour as the biggest supermarket chain in Uganda, with Capital Shoppers and Mega Standard also listed, and Wikipedia mentions the malls Acacia Mall, Arena Mall and Village Mall. Nakasero Market is the produce option, and Owino Market covers almost everything else. The Exposure Africa Crafts Village on Buganda Road is the place Wikivoyage points to for souvenirs and crafts.

The Kampala Capital City Authority publishes an events calendar and promotes a Kampala City Festival on its website, which is worth checking for what is on during your stay. If you are comparing African cities, the Uganda page lists everything we cover in the country.

When to visit Kampala

Wikipedia describes a tropical rainforest climate with heavier rain from August to December and from February to June, and April the wettest month at roughly 169 mm. Wikivoyage agrees there are two wetter seasons and no true dry season month.

Because rain is possible in most months, plan your travel around your own priorities rather than a single dry window.
