Wikivoyage calls Downtown the most central and commercial area in Georgia, and lists the state capitol, city hall and the Georgia Aquarium among its sights. The Atlanta Streetcar Downtown Loop connects Centennial Olympic Park, Peachtree Center MARTA station and the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site. Five Points is the one station where the north-south and east-west MARTA lines meet.

Wikivoyage describes Midtown as a major business and residential district just north of Downtown, with tall skyscrapers and a popular nightlife area. It includes Piedmont Park, the Woodruff Arts Center and the Georgia Tech campus. Both the Red and Gold MARTA lines run through it, so Downtown and the airport can be reached by rail.

Wikivoyage places Buckhead several miles north of Midtown and calls it a popular business and nightlife district and the home of the Atlanta History Center. It adds that the area has a large concentration of retail. Wikivoyage also mentions a Buckhead MARTA station, where riders can change to a bus for the Amtrak station.

Virginia-Highland

Wikivoyage lists Virginia-Highland with Poncey-Highland, Little Five Points and East Atlanta Village in its East Atlanta district. It says the area around the North Highland Avenue corridor is usually easy to explore on foot, but that the walk between Midtown and Virginia-Highland is a 30 to 45 minute one, so buses, trains or a car are better for that journey.

Wikivoyage says the City of Decatur is only a few miles from Downtown Atlanta but has kept its residential small-town character, and calls it one of the most pedestrian-friendly areas in the Atlanta region. It lists restaurants, bars and boutique shops among its draws.

Getting around Atlanta

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is about 8 miles south of Downtown, according to Wikivoyage. MARTA's own airport page says Airport Station is the final station at the south end of the Red and Gold lines, located between the north and south baggage claim areas on the west end of the domestic terminal. That gives a rail route from arrivals into Midtown and Downtown without a road transfer.

MARTA operates both the rail and bus networks. Wikivoyage describes the rail lines as Red, Gold, Blue and Green, with the Red and Gold lines running north-south and the Blue and Green running east-west, meeting only at Five Points Station. Riders use a reloadable Breeze card, which Wikivoyage says is needed to obtain transfers on buses. Amtrak's Crescent serves Atlanta Peachtree Station, which Wikivoyage places several miles north of Downtown and the airport.

Wikivoyage describes Midtown and Buckhead as business districts, while Decatur has kept a residential small-town character. It says walking within Midtown, Downtown, Decatur, Buckhead and the North Highland Avenue area is usually easy, and that getting between the neighbourhoods is best done by car or public transport.

When to visit Atlanta

Wikipedia gives Atlanta a humid subtropical climate with generous precipitation year-round. Summers are hot and humid, and winters are generally mild but variable, with occasional light snow. Wikivoyage says spring and autumn are the best times to visit, and that hurricane season, June to November, can bring remnants from the Gulf with heavy rain and sometimes high winds.
