Aparthotels and serviced apartments in Chicago are spread across a city that Wikivoyage describes as split into large sides around the central business district, the Loop. Wikivoyage notes that Chicagoans identify strongly with their own neighbourhood and that many visitors never make it past the attractions downtown, so the district you choose shapes a stay as much as the property does.
30 stays
Wikivoyage groups the Loop with Near North and Near South as Downtown, the centre of Chicago for work and play, with shopping, skyscrapers and big theatres. Its address system starts here, at the corner of State Street and Madison Street. Wikivoyage says CTA train lines lead into the Loop, and Union Station, just across the river in the West Loop, is the Amtrak hub and a Metra terminal.
Stays in or near The Loop
Wikivoyage places the Water Tower, a structure that survived the 1871 fire, in the Near North, along with River North, Streeterville, the Gold Coast and the Magnificent Mile shopping street. Choose Chicago describes Streeterville as a dynamic neighbourhood near the lakefront and Navy Pier. Wikivoyage says the CTA Red Line has stops near River North and the Magnificent Mile.
Stays in or near Near North Side
Wikivoyage lists Lincoln Park among the North Side's upscale neighbourhoods and says the park itself stretches along the lakefront with bicycle paths, beaches, harbours and museums. Lincoln Park Zoo lies just east of the neighbourhood, and the North Avenue Beach House stands on the lakefront nearby. DePaul University is part of the neighbourhood's character, according to Wikivoyage.
Wikivoyage places Lakeview on the North Side, where the Chicago Cubs play at Wrigley Field, and lists the Boystown district with it. The same page describes the North Side as an area of storefront theatres, bars and clubs, and says the bars near the ballpark are packed on weekends and all day when the Cubs are playing.
Wikivoyage places Wicker Park on the West Side alongside Logan Square, the Near West Side and Pilsen. It names Wicker Park and neighbouring Logan Square and Bucktown for bars and breweries, and as the main area for indie rock shows. It sits outside the downtown core.
Wikivoyage lists Hyde Park on the South Side and links it with the University of Chicago and the Museum of Science and Industry. Choose Chicago calls it a cultural hub with globally renowned museums, parks and beaches. Wikivoyage describes the Metra Electric Line as the quick public transport link between the Loop and Hyde Park.
Two airports serve Chicago. According to the CTA, the Blue Line runs directly to O'Hare, with the station in the lower-level concourse connecting directly to the terminals, and the Orange Line runs directly to Midway, whose accessible station has an enclosed walkway to the terminal building. The CTA says all trains from O'Hare and from Midway go through downtown.
The CTA runs the trains and buses within the city and calls its rail network the 'L'. Wikivoyage says all lines lead to the Loop except the Yellow Line and the Purple Line, which only serves the Loop at certain times. Payment is by Ventra card or a contactless payment card. Wikivoyage describes Chicago as one of the places best suited to visiting the United States without a car, thanks to good public transport and its role as a major rail hub, and says Metra's commuter trains serve the suburbs.
Wikivoyage explains that Chicago's grid makes orientation simple: every street is numbered by its distance from the zero point at State and Madison, and standard blocks are of equal length across the city. That makes it easy to judge how far a property is from the Loop or from the lakefront.
Wikivoyage describes the Lakefront Trail along the shoreline and says that travelling downtown along it can be faster than driving or taking the CTA. It also notes that CTA passes can be loaded onto a Ventra card but are not valid on Pace suburban buses or Metra trains, so a longer stay based outside the Loop needs a little planning around which network each trip uses.
Wikivoyage says there is a good time to be had in any season, but that the climate has to be taken into consideration. May and September are described as pleasant and mild, July and August can be hot and humid with the lakefront beaches offering relief, and the months from December to March are very cold, with bitter wind chill.
Wikivoyage lists Grant Park festivals through the summer, with Lollapalooza in August and Taste of Chicago in July. The Chicago Bears play at Soldier Field from September to January, and the baseball season runs from April to the beginning of October.
This page compares the main areas, from the skyscrapers of the Loop to the lakefront parks of Lincoln Park and the university district of Hyde Park, and explains how the CTA rail network connects them. For the format itself, see what is an aparthotel; for other cities, browse the USA hub.
