Midtown and Melrose

It says bars within Phoenix tend to cluster in the Midtown or Downtown areas, and that the light rail runs north to south mostly along the Central Avenue corridor.

Camelback corridor

  • hiking

Wikivoyage describes a shopping area serving the Camelback corridor, with nearby hotels, condos and apartments, which it calls an uptown destination. It describes Camelback Mountain as a recognisable landmark of the area, sitting between Phoenix to the south and Paradise Valley to the north, with very challenging hiking trails.

Tempe

  • nightlife
  • students
  • light rail

Wikivoyage says Tempe is popular with students given its proximity to the university, and describes it as part of the immediate Phoenix area for which the light rail is a viable option. It also lists Scottsdale as offering a lively bar and club scene.

Old Town Scottsdale

  • restaurants
  • galleries

Wikivoyage lists Scottsdale Old Town, at Scottsdale Road and Indian School Road, as an area of restaurants and art galleries, and says it is in the northeast of the Phoenix metropolitan area. Scottsdale is a neighbouring city that has merged with Phoenix into the Greater Phoenix Metropolitan Area.

Getting around Phoenix

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is at the southeast end of Downtown, according to Wikivoyage. The airport's own site says its PHX Sky Train is an automated train linking the terminals, the Rental Car Center and Valley Metro Rail at the 44th Street station, and that Valley Metro Rail gives access into Phoenix, Tempe and Mesa. Wikivoyage says the light rail runs east to west from downtown Phoenix, past the airport and on to Tempe and Mesa.

Wikivoyage describes Phoenix as pretty car-centric and says that if you plan to stay or visit any of the cities on the periphery of the metro area, a car will likely be required. For the immediate Phoenix area, including Tempe, the light rail is a viable option, and Valley Metro operates buses and light rail across the metro area. Wikivoyage adds that most roads follow a grid, with Central Avenue dividing east from west and Washington Street dividing north from south.

Living in Phoenix for longer

For transit, Wikivoyage recommends a reloadable Copper card or the Valley Metro app, as the old paper passes have been discontinued. It notes that Phoenix and some larger suburbs run circulators around their downtown areas, including the DASH from downtown to the state capitol.

Wikivoyage says the nightlife is centred around the sub-cities of the metro area, which are spread out enough that getting between them on a big night out can be difficult, so the choice of base within the metro area matters for a longer stay.

When to visit Phoenix

Wikivoyage describes an arid climate with long, hot summers and very mild winters. It credits warm and sunny winter weather for the city's tourism industry, and says that in summer, due to the extreme heat, virtually everyone tries to avoid being outside more than necessary.

Winter visitors will generally be looking for outdoor activities such as golf and resort pools, according to Wikivoyage, which also says Phoenix holds its Pride Parade outside the summer months because of the heat, in October since the pandemic.

Because the metropolitan area is so spread out, the choice between Downtown, the Camelback corridor and the neighbouring cities of Tempe and Scottsdale shapes a stay. This page compares the main options and explains how light rail connects the airport.
