Obertauern is a compact ski resort strung along the Radstädter Tauern pass in the south-east of Salzburgerland, at about 1,630 metres. Aparthotels and serviced apartments in Obertauern suit what the resort does best: a week on snow for families and groups who want a kitchen, drying space for ski kit and room to spread out, rather than a single hotel room. Because the village is small and almost everything sits on or beside the slopes, an apartment-style stay keeps the logistics simple.

The village lies by the highest point of the pass, which the B 99 road crosses, and the lifts are laid out in a circle around it. According to Austria's national tourist office, almost every accommodation sits on the slopes, and there is no need for a car. The resort has more than 50 huts and restaurants, so eating out is easy; this is where most apartment-style stays are found.
Stays in or near Obertauern village and pass
Obertauern extends across two municipalities, Untertauern in the north (Pongau) and Tweng in the south (Lungau), and the municipal boundary runs through the centre of the village at the height of the pass. Tweng lies in the Lungau on the south side of the Radstädter Tauern, in the district of Tamsweg, and the ski resort stretches across to it. The village of Tweng itself is a separate settlement south of the resort.
Untertauern lies in the valley of the Northern Taurach, about 10 km south of Radstadt, with the road running on up to the pass and the ski resort. It is a valley base below the resort, so expect to travel up the pass road to reach the lifts.
Radstadt is a historic town in the Enns valley that received city rights in 1289. It has the nearest railway station to the resort, around a 20-minute drive away, and the road south follows the Taurach stream up through Untertauern to the pass. It makes sense as a base if you arrive by train.
The closest airport is Salzburg, about 57 miles (roughly 92 km) away according to Austria's national tourist office. The nearest railway station is Radstadt, a 20-minute drive from the resort, and the B 99 road crosses the pass.
Within the resort there is no need for a car: guests with a valid ski ticket and ski equipment can use the ski bus free of charge between Untertauern and Tweng, and the Guest Mobility Ticket Salzburg covers public transport across the region. Nearly all accommodation is within easy reach of the lifts.
A stay of a week suits an apartment well in a resort this size. The village has a small permanent population of around 200 and is built around the ski season, so plan ahead for groceries rather than expecting a big supermarket. Radstadt, in the valley below, is the closest town.
Many hotels and businesses close in summer, so a longer stay outside the ski season needs more planning. For help weighing up the formats, see aparthotels versus hotels and what an aparthotel is.
