Getting around Vienna

From Vienna International Airport, the S7 suburban train reaches the city in about 24 minutes, the City Airport Train runs to Wien Mitte (temporarily replaced by buses during engineering works, with trains due back in late 2027), and long-distance trains reach Wien Hauptbahnhof in about 15 minutes. Bratislava airport, 54 km away, is linked by coach to Erdberg on the U3.

Wiener Linien runs the U-Bahn, trams and buses. The U-Bahn has five lines, with a sixth, the U5, under construction; trains run from about 5am to 1am, and through the night on Fridays and Saturdays. Single tickets are valid for 80 minutes, and there are 24-hour and flexible seven-day tickets; buy them from machines, tobacconists or the WienMobil app.

Living in Vienna for longer

For a stay of more than a few days, the flexible seven-day ticket or the Vienna City Card, which combines unlimited travel with sightseeing discounts, is simpler than buying singles. Children under six travel free, and under-15s travel free on Sundays, public holidays and during Vienna's school holidays.

The Naschmarkt is the place for fresh produce, spices and delicatessen, and on Saturdays a flea market spreads along the adjacent stretch of the Wienzeile. Summers can be hot, with average highs of 27–32°C, so check for good ventilation or air-conditioning; winters are fairly cold and dry.

When to visit Vienna

Vienna has warm, showery summers and fairly cold, relatively dry winters, with around 600 mm of rain a year. Spring and early autumn are the most comfortable for walking the city.

January and February are ball season, the Wiener Festwochen arts festival runs from May into June, the free Donauinselfest music festival takes over the Danube Island in early summer (3–5 July in 2026), and Christmas markets open across the city from November to December.

Public transport is so comprehensive that only about half of Viennese households own a car, so a well-connected apartment in an outer district can work as well as one in the old town. For tips on longer moves, see our relocation guide; for the Alps, try Salzburg or the Austria hub.
