Ramsau am Dachstein is a mountain municipality in Styria, on a sunny plateau at around 1,100 metres between the Dachstein massif and the Enns valley, with a little over 2,800 residents. It is a major cross-country skiing centre and the starting point for the Dachstein glacier lift. The Dachstein glacier cable car starts from the Ramsau valley station and reaches attractions at about 2,700 metres, including the Skywalk viewing platform, the Ice Palace glacier cave and the Stairway to Nothingness. Wikipedia notes the glacier supports year-round Alpine skiing, cross-country skiing and snowboarding.
Schladming lies a few kilometres from Ramsau and its station, on the Salzburg-Graz line, is the usual rail access point for Ramsau. It is a former mining town and now a winter sports destination centred on the Planai, and it hosted the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships in 1982 and 2013.
Rail access is via Schladming station, on the Salzburg-Graz line. The glacier operator says nearest airports are Salzburg (90 km), Graz (160 km) and Munich (220 km), and by car all routes lead to Ramsau via the Ennstal road (B 320). Salzburg is about 100 km and 1.5 hours away by car, Munich 218 km and Vienna 305 km.
Bus line 960 connects Schladming station with Ramsau am Dachstein and serves the Dachstein gondola valley station, according to the regional tourism board. The Dachstein glacier bus, operated by Ramsauer Verkehrsbetriebe, departs from Planet Planai in Schladming. In summer, hiking buses 972 and 973 serve the Ursprungalm and Duisitzkarsee routes, and the Schladming-Dachstein Sommercard includes travel on the hiking buses.
For longer stays, Ramsau suits people who want to be outdoors every day: the cross-country network, glacier lift and hiking routes give plenty of variety, and Schladming is the nearby town. Ramsau is a four-season destination. The tourism board lists family-friendly activities in both summer and winter, and the regional winter calendar includes the Nordic Winter Opening in early December, a FIS World Cup in mid-December and the Dachstein run in January.
In summer, hiking and via ferrata routes open up on the plateau and around the Dachstein, with hiking buses running in the season and a summer shuttle from July to September. The glacier cable car operates seasonally and publishes its own opening dates, so check the operator's page before planning a visit.
