Nairobi is East Africa's main business and diplomatic hub, home to the UN Office at Nairobi and a regional base for many companies, so a large share of visitors are here for weeks or months rather than days. Aparthotels and serviced apartments in Nairobi suit those stays: a kitchen, a proper workspace and separate rooms make a long assignment easier, and families on safari or relocating have room to spread out between trips.

About 3 km north-west of the central business district, Westlands has become one of Nairobi's main commercial centres, with offices, hotels and shopping centres including Sarit Centre and Westgate. It is also the city's nightlife hub, and it sits at the western end of the Nairobi Expressway, which links it with the airport.

Kilimani, about 5 km west of the CBD, has grown from a low-density suburb into a mixed area of apartment blocks, offices and shops. The Yaya Centre covers everyday shopping, and the Nairobi Arboretum, with more than 300 tree species, is nearby for walks.

Upper Hill is a decentralised business district just south-west of the city centre, which grew as companies moved out of the crowded CBD. It suits work trips where offices and meetings are close by, and it is a short drive to both the CBD and Kilimani.

Gigiri, on the city's northern side, is home to the United Nations Office at Nairobi and the UN Environment Programme. It is the obvious base for anyone attending UN meetings and sits away from the downtown traffic.
South-west of the centre, Karen is a low-density, tree-lined suburb named after the author Karen Blixen, whose former farmhouse is now the Karen Blixen Museum. It borders the Ngong Forest, has shopping centres such as The Hub and The Waterfront, and is close to the Giraffe Centre in neighbouring Lang'ata.
Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) lies 15–18 km south-east of the city centre. Official airport taxis wait outside the terminals, and Uber and Bolt also operate there. The Nairobi Expressway, an elevated toll road completed in 2022, runs from the airport area to Westlands and avoids much of the congestion on Mombasa Road. A rail link to central Nairobi has run since 2020, and city bus route 34 serves the airport, though it can be slow in traffic. Wilson Airport, about 4 km south of the CBD, handles mainly domestic flights.
Within the city, most visitors use registered taxis or ride-hailing apps, especially after dark. Matatus, the privately run minibuses, cover the whole city and many longer routes, but they are crowded and pickpocketing is a concern. The Standard Gauge Railway, opened in 2017, runs from Nairobi to Mombasa and is a comfortable alternative to flying to the coast.
Large shopping centres make self-catering straightforward: Two Rivers, Garden City and Sarit Centre all have supermarkets, and the Yaya Centre in Kilimani is handy for day-to-day needs. The Maasai Market moves to a different location on different days of the week and is the place for crafts, though haggling is expected.
Plan your routines around traffic and safety. Avoid walking at night, use registered taxis or ride-hailing apps, and keep valuables out of sight in crowded areas. If you are relocating for work, our guide to serviced apartments for relocation covers what to check before a longer let.
At about 1,795 m above sea level, Nairobi has a subtropical highland climate that stays mild all year. December to March is the warmest period, while June and July are the coolest, with night-time temperatures dropping to around 9°C. There are two rainy seasons: the long rains from March to May, peaking in April, and the short rains from October to December.
The drier stretches between the rainy seasons, from June to September and from January to February, are the easiest times for game drives in Nairobi National Park and for onward safaris. For business travel the city works year-round, but heavy rain can slow traffic during the wet seasons.
The city is spread out and most visitors get around by car, so choosing the right district matters more than in a compact European capital. Many people combine a Nairobi stay with time on the coast in Mombasa or at Diani Beach.
