Āgenskalns lies on the Pārdaugava side of the river, across the Daugava from the Old Town, which the Stone Bridge connects to Pārdaugava according to Wikipedia. Wikipedia also names it among the districts beyond the centre with popular bars and venues. It is a base for visitors who prefer a neighbourhood setting and are happy to ride into the centre.
Rīga International Airport is about 10 km south-west of the city according to Wikivoyage. Bus 22 reaches the Old Town in 30 to 40 minutes, and taxis are the alternative. Wikipedia describes it as the largest and busiest airport in the Baltic States.
