Where to stay in Kaunas

Old Town (Senamiestis)

  • first-time visitors
  • sightseeing
  • evening walks

Wikipedia places the Old Town at the confluence of the Nemunas and Neris rivers and says its streets have been turned into pedestrian walkways, so it is best toured on foot. Kaunas Castle, the Town Hall and the historical Presidential Palace are among its prominent features, according to Wikipedia, and Wikivoyage calls City Hall Square the focus of the Old Town. It is the most atmospheric base for a short stay.

New Town and Laisvės alėja

  • business travel
  • shopping
  • transport links

Wikivoyage calls Laisvės alėja the pedestrianised boulevard forming the spine of the New Town, lined with shops, restaurants, museums and places to stay, and says it ends at the Church of St Michael the Archangel. Wikipedia gives the street's length as 1.6 km and says it is lined with linden trees. Wikivoyage places the tourist information centre on this street and the bus station in the New Town, 300 m north of the railway station, which makes it a practical base for arrivals and onward trips.

Žaliakalnis

  • architecture
  • quiet stays
  • museums

Wikivoyage places the M. K. Čiurlionis Museum of Art, the Devils' Museum and the Church of the Resurrection along Putvinskio and Žemaičių streets, and says the Žaliakalnis Funicular climbs from Putvinskio g up to Žemaičių g. Wikipedia says the Žaliakalnis and Aleksotas funiculars both date from the 1930s. The hillside sits above the centre and suits visitors who want museums and interwar architecture close to hand.

Ąžuolynas and Nemunas Island

  • families
  • running and walking
  • parks

Wikipedia describes Ąžuolynas as the main public park in the heart of Kaunas, covering about 63 hectares and described as the largest urban stand of mature oaks in Europe. Wikivoyage says the Lithuanian Zoo is within the park, and that Nemunas Park, a river island linked by footbridges to the centre, is a green space to escape downtown. It is a good side of town for families and anyone who wants outdoor space near their apartment.

Pažaislis

  • quiet stays
  • music lovers
  • reservoir walks

Wikipedia calls the Pažaislis Church and Monastery ensemble, started in 1667, one of the most famous monuments of Baroque architecture in Kaunas, and lists the Pažaislis music festival among the annual events from June to August. The area lies east of the centre by the Kaunas Reservoir, which Wikipedia calls the largest body of water in Lithuania, so it suits a calmer stay with a bus or car link into the centre.

Getting around Kaunas

Wikivoyage says Kaunas International Airport is 14 km northeast of Kaunas on the A6/E262, and that bus 29 from outside Arrivals runs to the main railway and bus station. KaunasIN, the city's tourism information site, also calls bus No. 29 the most convenient option from the airport. Wikipedia names Ryanair as the airline that made Kaunas its base in 2010, and Wikivoyage lists Wizz Air as another operator, so check current schedules before you book. Vilnius Airport is about 100 km east, according to Wikivoyage, which says a direct Ollex bus runs from there to the city centre.

By land, Wikivoyage says trains from Vilnius run hourly and take 90 minutes, and buses between the two cities run every 15 minutes. Kaunas railway station is in the southeast corner of the city, about 2 km from the Old Town. Within the city, the public transport operator Kauno viešasis transportas (KVT) lists buses and trolleybuses and offers single paper tickets on board, single e-tickets, monthly e-passes and the Žiogas app, with a transfer allowed within 30 minutes on e-tickets.

Living in Kaunas for longer

For a longer stay, choose by routine. The New Town around Laisvės alėja has the shops, banks and supermarkets that Wikivoyage lists along the boulevard, and it is next to the bus and railway stations. The Old Town is pedestrian and lively but you will rely more on public transport for everyday shopping. KaunasIN notes that Kaunas has no multi-day passes, so frequent riders are better served by the Žiogas app or a monthly pass from KVT.

Wikipedia says Kaunas has 16 urban parks and that its universities attract thousands of students annually, which gives the city parkland and a student presence. Wikivoyage says you only really need a car for outlying sights and that the Old Town low-emission zone discourages driving through it, so choose an apartment on a bus or trolleybus line rather than relying on parking.

When to visit Kaunas

Wikipedia gives Kaunas a humid continental climate, with warm summers (average daytime highs of 21–22 °C) and relatively cold, sometimes snowy winters averaging between −8 and 0 °C. It says the city has about 17 hours of daylight in midsummer and around 7 in midwinter. Wikivoyage says the best time to visit is May to August.

Wikipedia's list of annual events places the Kaunas Jazz Festival in April–May, Kaunas City Day in mid-May and the Pažaislis music festival from June to August, with Christmas tree lighting at the end of November. Winter is quieter, and Wikivoyage says museums stay open and the streets are ploughed, so a cold-season stay in a heated apartment is realistic.

Wikivoyage describes the Old Town as the main reason to visit, connected to the 19th-century New Town along Laisvės alėja, and notes that Kaunas was the country's capital between the two world wars. Wikipedia adds that the city's interwar modernist architecture became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2023. Kaunas is in Lithuania, and the capital Vilnius is linked to it by frequent trains and buses.
