Wikipedia says the Old Town developed on a peninsula along the Danė River, with settlement from the second half of the 15th century onwards, and that some older buildings in the centre are half-timbered. Wikivoyage says the district follows a grid pattern because it was rebuilt after a fire in 1854, and describes Theatre Square at its heart and an alley of restaurants called Friedricho Pasažas. It is the best base for sightseeing on foot.

Wikipedia says Smiltynė is part of Klaipėda municipality at the northern tip of the Curonian Spit, and serves as a public beach for the city's residents. The Lithuanian Sea Museum and Dolphinarium are here, according to the Klaipėda tourist information centre. It is reached by ferry, so it suits visitors who want to stay on the spit side of the strait.
Wikivoyage places the bus station just outside the railway station and lists direct connections from Vilnius and Kaunas. Staying here is practical for onward trips, although the Old Town and ferries are a local bus or walk away. Check each listing for exact distances.
Wikivoyage describes Palanga Airport, 36 km north of Klaipėda, as the closest international airport, with a bus 31 connection to Klaipėda. It also says TT-Line runs ferries from Trelleborg and Karlshamn in Sweden and from Travemünde and Rostock in Germany, and DFDS from Karlshamn and Kiel, and that the bus station is just outside the railway station. Confirm current timetables with the operators.
The Klaipėda tourist information centre describes two ferry terminals for Smiltynė. The Old Ferry Terminal in the city centre carries passengers, bicycles and pets, while the New Ferry Terminal at Nemuno St. 8 carries cars, buses, pedestrians and cyclists. The Smiltynė ferries are also the way to reach Nida, Juodkrantė, Preila and Pervalka in the Curonian Spit National Park, and timetables are at keltas.lt.
The city is compact and the Old Town has restaurants, cafés and museums within walking distance. Wikivoyage lists the Švyturys brewery tour and jazz clubs among things to do, which makes evenings easy without a car.
