Muttrah is the historic district with the Mutrah Souq, which Experience Oman describes as a traditional Arab market with a maze of alleys. Muttrah Fort stands on the hills above, looking over the Muttrah Corniche and the old harbour, and the Bait Al Zubair Museum is listed nearby. Wikipedia describes Muttrah as the most densely populated province in the country, so expect a busy, built-up setting.
Ruwi is Muscat's commercial quarter, according to Wikivoyage. It is also home to the Ruwi bus station, which is served by Mwasalat's airport route A1, so it is a practical location if you plan to rely on buses.
Qurum is known for Qurum Beach, which Experience Oman calls a popular sandy beach with a promenade and for Qurm National Park, which Wikivoyage lists with rose gardens, a waterfall and a lake. This is the part of Muscat to choose if the sea and open green space matter more than being in a historic quarter.
Old Muscat is the area around the royal palace, according to Wikivoyage. Wikivoyage lists the coastal forts of Al Jalali and Al Mirani among Muscat's key attractions, and Experience Oman describes historic forts overlooking the bay.
Al Khuwair is the terminus of Mwasalat's Route 8, which runs between Al Mouj and Al Khuwair and serves the airport terminal, according to Wikipedia. That gives it a direct bus link to the airport.
Stays in or near Al Khuwair
Wikipedia says Muscat International Airport is about 32 km from the old city centre. Mwasalat, the national transport company, runs buses past the airport including Route A1, which connects Mabela with Ruwi bus station, and Route 8, running from Al Mouj to Al Khuwair. Metered taxis are available at counters in the baggage claim and arrivals areas, and car rental and chauffeur services also operate at the airport.
Within the city, Wikivoyage lists Mwasalat buses, white maxi-taxi minibuses and e-hailing through the O Taxi app. The districts are strung out along the coast, so a hire car or taxis are useful if you plan to see the forts, beaches and the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque in one day.
Muscat's main districts each have a different function, so choose a base that matches your routine: Ruwi for commercial and bus links, Qurum for beach and park access, and Al Khuwair for a direct bus to the airport. Muttrah is the best place to be if you want to explore on foot, as the souq, corniche and fort are close together.
For a longer relocation, the guide to serviced apartments for relocation covers what to ask for. Wikivoyage lists trekking paths, diving centres, public beaches and bird watching at the Al Ansab Wetlands, which gives weekend options without leaving the capital area.
Muscat has a hot, arid climate. Summer temperatures can reach 45 degrees Celsius, and annual rainfall is about 10 cm, falling mostly from December to April, according to Wikipedia. Wikipedia describes long, sweltering summers and warm winters, so the winter months are the easier time for outdoor sightseeing.
Choose the winter months if you plan to walk around Muttrah or visit the forts, and avoid the hottest part of the day whenever you go.

Mwasalat buses including routes A1 and 8 stop at the airport, and metered taxis are available at the terminal. Car rental and chauffeur services also operate there.
The winter months are the easier time for sightseeing, because Wikipedia describes long, sweltering summers when temperatures can reach 45 degrees Celsius.
It helps, because the main districts are spread along the coast. Buses, maxi taxis and e-hailing are alternatives, and Muttrah can be explored on foot.
The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, Mutrah Souq, the National Museum, the Royal Opera House and the coastal forts of Al Jalali and Al Mirani are the highlights.
