Aparthotels & serviced apartments in Salalah

24 stays · 22 aparthotels and 2 serviced apartments

Salalah is the capital of Oman's southern Dhofar governorate and the base for exploring a coast and mountain range that turn green each summer. Aparthotels and serviced apartments in Salalah work well here because places to stay and eat outside the city are scarce: a kitchen lets you pack food and water for day trips into the wadis, and the extra space helps the many families who arrive for the khareef season.

Getting around Salalah

Salalah International Airport has frequent flights from Muscat with Oman Air, plus direct services from Gulf cities including Doha, Dubai and Sharjah. Mwasalat, the national transport company, has run city buses in Salalah since December 2018, including a route linking the airport, the city centre and Salalah Port. Taxis are orange and white and unmetered, so agree the fare before setting off.

Mwasalat and other operators run daily long-distance buses to Muscat from the station by the New Souq; the journey takes around 12 hours. Within the city most sights are fairly close together, but heat makes walking hard work outside the cooler months. To reach the mountains, wadis and the Mughsail blowholes, hire a car: an ordinary car is fine in town, but an SUV is advisable for off-road sites, especially on slippery khareef roads.

Living in Salalah for longer

Supermarkets and hypermarkets are spread across the city, from Lulu Hypermarket near Al Matar Street to a smaller supermarket with international food by An Nahdah roundabout. The Handicraft Souq and Souq Al Hafa are the places for traditional crafts, frankincense and gifts. Book a hire car well ahead if you are staying through the khareef, as rental agencies often run out of vehicles.

Carry plenty of water on trips outside the city, and take care at the beaches: strong currents and a steep drop-off make the sea unsafe for swimming. For a longer assignment in Dhofar, our guide to serviced apartments for relocation covers what to look for.

When to visit Salalah

Salalah has a hot desert climate, but its summer is unusual: the khareef monsoon, from roughly June to September, brings mist, drizzle and cooler air, and turns the mountains green. July and August are the peak months, when visitors from across Oman and the Gulf arrive for the Khareef Dhofar Tourism Festival; book well ahead for that period.

From October to May the weather is dry and sunny, with daytime highs of roughly 27–33°C. This is the season for diving, which is only possible outside the khareef, and from November to April the lagoon of Khawr Salalah, in the city, attracts flamingos and other birds. May and June are the hottest and most humid months.

The city stretches along a flat coastal plain between the sea and the Dhofar mountains, with coconut and banana gardens between the districts. It is a short flight from Muscat, and the frankincense sites of Al Baleed and Sumhuram, both UNESCO World Heritage sites, are within easy reach.
