Aparthotels and serviced apartments in Mamaia suit beach holidays where you want a kitchen, a balcony and space for a family or group rather than a single hotel room. Mamaia is a resort district of Constanța on Romania's Black Sea coast, set on a strip of land about 8 km long and only 300 m wide, between the sea and Lake Siutghiol. Wikipedia calls it Romania's most popular resort, and its hotels range from mid-range to luxury, with camping facilities in the north.

The southern end of the strip is where visitors arrive from Constanța. A gondola lift opened in 2004, spanning 2 km, links the entrance to the resort with the casino area. The Aqua Magic water park is also at this end, which makes it a natural choice for families with children. It is also the nearest part of the strip to Constanța.
The area around the casino is the centre of the resort, with the beach on one side and Lake Siutghiol on the other. It suits visitors who want shops, restaurants and the sea within a short walk of their apartment.
Stays in or near Casino and central Mamaia
Further up the strip from the casino, northern Mamaia is less central but still on the main boulevard, and Wikivoyage lists buses 41 and 47 as running to the north end of the strip. The beach is on one side and the lake on the other, as everywhere along the strip. It is a sensible option if you prefer to be away from the casino area but still want to walk to the sand.
Stays in or near Northern Mamaia
Constanța's railway station, where CT BUS line 100 starts for Mamaia, is the main arrival point by rail. Staying in Constanța rather than on the strip puts you in a city with residents all year, though you give up being on the beach. It can also work as a base for the wider coast.
Mamaia is reached through Constanța. The city bus operator CT BUS lists line 100, Mamaia, running between the Constanța railway station (Gară CFR) and the resort, with services from early morning until about 23:00. Wikivoyage also lists lines 23E, 41 and 47, with buses 41 and 47 running to the north end of the strip. A seasonal City Tour line also served the resort. Check the CT BUS site for current timetables, as routes and summer services change.
The Telegondola is a cable car that doubles as scenic transport between the southern entrance and the casino area, with a total length of 2 km according to Wikipedia. Local buses travel the main boulevard, and Wikivoyage notes taxis operate throughout the resort. CT BUS also publishes a live map showing vehicle positions.
Mamaia is seasonal, so for longer stays outside summer you may want to base yourself in Constanța, a city with permanent residents, and travel to the beach when the weather allows. In summer, an apartment with a kitchen and a balcony makes long beach stays more comfortable, since you can cook for yourselves.
If you are travelling with children, our guide to travelling with kids in aparthotels explains what to look for. For a stay of several weeks, ask about laundry facilities and how far the nearest shops are.
Wikipedia says the beach season is at its best from mid-June to early September, with average daytime temperatures between 25 and 30 degrees Celsius. Wikivoyage gives a longer window, from mid-May to late September, says crowds arrive as early as May, and notes the water stays warm until late autumn. The climate is humid subtropical with cool winters and warm summers that rarely exceed 32 degrees Celsius.
Book early if you need a family-sized apartment in high season. Some seasonal services stop before the season ends: CT BUS lists a seasonal City Tour line that is suspended in early September, so check which bus services still run if you travel at the end of summer.
Mamaia is a summer place with almost no full-time residents, according to Wikipedia, so timing matters more than almost anything else: outside the summer season many services are quieter. This page covers where along the strip to stay, how to get there and what each part of the season is like. For the practical differences between formats, see aparthotels versus hotels, and for the northern end of the strip see Mamaia Nord.
