Best time to visit

When is the best time to visit Italy?

Facts checked against the cited sources on

Italy stretches from the Alps to Sicily, and the weather differs accordingly. Milan and the Dolomites share very little with Palermo in January, and a mid-July afternoon in Rome is a different proposition from the same day in Bolzano. The best month depends on whether you want museums, beaches, lakes, hills or snow.

The climate tables are WMO World Weather Information Service pages carrying 1971 to 2000 normals from the Italian Air Force Meteorological Service for five stations. Seasonal and event information come from Italia.it, the national tourism site, and fire-season dates from the Civil Protection Department, all read in October 2026. Our own stays in Italy are in the table below.

Italy by season in one view

For most city and countryside trips, spring and autumn are the usual advice, and the station figures show why. In Rome the average high is 22.8 degrees Celsius in May and 21.4 in October, against 30.6 in August, and the driest weather comes in summer, not spring. In the north, though, rain falls all year, so there is no dry season to wait for.

Beach trips lean on summer and the south, ski trips on the Alps in winter, and quiet city breaks on the cooler months. The sections below take the country in three parts, then cover heat and fire, shoulder months and winter. Use them with the regional hubs for Rome, Venice and Milan.

The north: Milan, Venice and Bolzano

Milan and Venice stand for the Po plain and the Adriatic edge, and Bolzano for the Alpine valleys. Winters are cold: January average highs are 5.9 degrees Celsius at Milan, 6.6 at Venice and 6.3 at Bolzano, and January lows are -0.9, -0.1 and -4.5. Summers are warm without the extremes of the south: July highs are 29.2 at Milan, 27.7 at Venice and 29.0 at Bolzano.

Rain falls through the year. Milan's wettest month is October, at 122.4 mm, and its driest is February, at 49.2 mm. Venice is wettest in June at 78.0 mm and driest in January at 47.0 mm. Bolzano is the driest of the three in winter, with 22.8 mm in February, but July is its wettest month, at 92.3 mm. A visit to the northern plains in September or May avoids both the winter cold and the peak summer heat, at the price of some showers. The tables do not include a lake station, so treat Milan and Bolzano as a range for the lakes between them.

The centre: Rome

Rome has a classic dry-summer pattern. July is the driest month at 19.2 mm over 2.1 days, and August has 36.8 mm. The wettest months are the autumn pair, November at 115.4 mm and October at 113.3 mm. Spring is not especially dry: April records 80.5 mm, more than any month from January to September, while May drops to 52.8 mm.

Average highs reach 30.3 degrees Celsius in July and 30.6 in August, with lows around 18. In May the high is 22.8 and in October 21.4, with 52.8 and 113.3 mm of rain. That makes May the better of the two shoulder months for rain, and October the better for avoiding the summer heat. January highs of 11.9 degrees suit museum days with a coat.

The south and Sicily: Palermo

Palermo is mild in winter and very dry in midsummer. January highs are 14.7 degrees Celsius and lows 8.9, the mildest winter of the five stations. July has 6.7 mm of rain over 1.2 days, while December is the wettest month at 123.7 mm over 12 days. Italia.it describes Sicily's winter minimums as between 10 and 14 degrees Celsius, a little above the 8.5 to 10.2 degree lows of the Palermo normals for December to February, so treat the tourism figure as a loose guide. It adds that rain is scarce and mostly falls in winter.

For the sea, Italia.it says the bathing season in Sicily runs from May to October, that the sea reaches about 27 degrees Celsius in midsummer and about 16 in winter, and that spring and autumn suit village and art-city visits in a quieter atmosphere. The station shows August as the hottest month, at a 30.5 degree high, with only 31.8 mm of rain. The island gets over 2,500 hours of sun a year, per the same page.

Summer: heat, crowds and the wildfire campaign

July or August is the hottest month at every station: August at Rome and Palermo, July at Milan, Venice and Bolzano. Rome and Palermo both exceed a 30 degree Celsius average high in August, and August lows range from 17.6 to 22.7 degrees at Milan, Rome and Palermo, so nights offer limited relief. Summer is also the busiest time for coastal and lake destinations, so book early.

Italy's Civil Protection Department fixed the 2026 summer wildfire campaign from 15 June to 15 October, with a peak period from 1 July to 5 September. In the peak period the State fleet is 15 CL415 Canadair aircraft and 4 Erickson S64F helicopters, with bases that include Genova, Rome, Naples, Catania, Trapani, Cagliari and Olbia. The page does not say which regions face the highest risk, and this describes the 2026 schedule, not a forecast for another year. If you hike or camp in summer, check regional fire rules and local advice before you go.

Spring and autumn shoulder seasons

Spring runs from late March to May. Rome's average high is 15.2 degrees Celsius in March, 17.7 in April and 22.8 in May, while Palermo has 16.4, 18.7 and 23.3. Italia.it points to the northern lakes in spring for mild-weather outdoor holidays. April is the wettest spring month at Rome, at 80.5 mm, while Milan's wettest is May, at 95.5 mm.

Autumn from September to November brings falling heat and rising rain in the centre and north. September highs are 26.5 degrees at Rome, 24.4 at Milan and 27.5 at Palermo, with rain at 73.3, 93.1 and 65.3 mm. By October the rain increases, and Milan's 122.4 mm is the highest monthly figure of the northern stations. Italia.it recommends Sardinia in autumn, because mild temperatures still allow sea activities. September is the better month for beach plans; November is the wetter, quieter city month.

Winter: Alps, markets and the mild south

Winter sports centre on the Alps. Italia.it's winter page describes Dolomiti Superski as 450 ski lifts and 1,200 km of slopes across twelve areas on one pass; these are rounded tourism-site figures and the operator's own totals can differ by season. At Bolzano the January low of -4.5 degrees Celsius is the coldest of the five stations, while February is its driest month, at 22.8 mm over 3.1 days.

The same page lists dated cultural events for the 2026/27 winter: the Christmas Markets in Bolzano from 27 November 2026 to 6 January 2027, and the Living Nativity in Matera from 5 December 2026 to 3 January 2027. Other listings show opening ceremonies a day earlier, so confirm dates with the organisers. The southern winter is gentler: Palermo's January high is 14.7 degrees against 5.9 at Milan. Italia.it says Sicily's rain mostly falls in winter, so that season suits city and food trips rather than beach plans.

Best months by purpose

These pairings are our selection, not a ranking. The criteria were Italia.it's seasonal guidance and the station normals above.

  • City sightseeing: April to May and September to October, when Rome's average highs run from 17.7 to 26.5 degrees Celsius instead of 30.6 in August.
  • Beach and swimming: June to September, and May to October in Sicily according to Italia.it.
  • Driest weather: July in Rome (19.2 mm) and Palermo (6.7 mm). The north has no dry summer.
  • Skiing and snow: winter in the Alps; Italia.it cites Dolomiti Superski's 1,200 km of slopes.
  • Mild winter city stay: Palermo, with a January high of 14.7 degrees.
  • Lakes and outdoor walking: spring, per Italia.it, with Milan and Bolzano as a temperature range.

Limits of these figures

The tables are 1971 to 2000 normals at five stations and the WMO page does not define a rain day, so the day counts are a guide to pattern only. They cannot represent Naples, Florence, Puglia, Sardinia or the high Dolomites. Italia.it is a promotional site, so we use it for dated events and stated seasons, not for rankings. Entry rules are not covered; check the official Italian immigration website.

A kitchen is useful in a country where self-catering from local markets is a big part of the appeal; see our note on cooking in an aparthotel kitchen. For longer stays across a season change, when to book an aparthotel explains how lead times differ.
