Milan is a city of trade fairs, fashion weeks and corporate headquarters, and aparthotels and serviced apartments suit the way many people visit: for a trade fair, a project lasting several weeks or a relocation. A kitchen, a desk and space to unwind make longer working stays far more comfortable than a hotel room, and families visiting the city get room to spread out within easy reach of the Duomo.

The Centro Storico surrounds the Duomo, the Galleria and La Scala, with the luxury fashion streets of the Quadrilatero around Via Montenapoleone close by. Metro lines meet at Duomo and San Babila, and the new M4 runs from San Babila straight to Linate Airport. It is the most convenient base for a short stay.

Brera, just north of the centre, sits between the Duomo and Porta Nuova and is within walking distance of both. It suits visitors who want a neighbourhood base while staying close to the main sights and the fashion streets.

Porta Nuova is one of Milan's main business districts, a modern quarter of towers including the UniCredit Tower, Italy's tallest building, and the planted Bosco Verticale. Neighbouring Isola sits just beyond the towers. Garibaldi and Centrale stations are nearby for trains and the Malpensa Express.
Stays in or near Porta Nuova and Isola
The Navigli district follows the Naviglio Grande and Naviglio Pavese canals in the south of the city. Its banks are lined with bars and restaurants, making it the classic place for an evening aperitivo, and a monthly antiques market sets up along the Naviglio Grande. Expect late, lively nights.

Porta Romana, south-east of the centre, is the site of a major regeneration project. Part of the former railway yard became the athletes' village for the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics and is being converted into student housing, with new public plazas and gardens. It suits longer stays with good links to the centre.
Stays in or near Porta Romana
Linate Airport, just 7 km from the centre, is linked by the driverless M4 metro line, which has run the full length from Linate to San Cristoforo since October 2024 and stops at San Babila. Malpensa, about 40 km away, is served by the Malpensa Express to Cadorna and Centrale stations. Bergamo Orio al Serio is about 45 km away, with buses every half hour during the day.
ATM runs five metro lines, M1 to M5, plus trams and buses; a standard ticket is valid for 90 minutes across the network, and M1 and M2 run every couple of minutes at peak times. BikeMi bike sharing operates across the city, and the centre is very walkable.
For longer stays, pick an area on a metro line that serves your office or campus; Porta Nuova suits those working in the business district, Porta Romana and Isola offer a more residential setting, and the city's 90-minute integrated tickets make combining metro, tram and bus easy. On Saturdays, the Fiera di Senigallia flea market draws bargain hunters.
Note that many businesses close for part of August. Anyone moving to the city for work should read our relocation guide, and nearby Bergamo makes an easy day trip.
Milan has hot, humid summers and cold, often foggy winters. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable times to explore, and in December the city is lit up with Christmas markets and decorations. In August many shops and restaurants close for the holidays.
The busiest periods are trade fairs and fashion events: Milan Fashion Week takes place in February–March and September–October, and the Salone del Mobile design fair runs at Fiera Milano in Rho, with the 2027 edition on 13–18 April. Book well ahead for those weeks.
The city is compact and well connected, with five metro lines and a dense tram and bus network, so the choice of area comes down to atmosphere and commute. Demand peaks sharply during the big fairs, which is worth knowing when planning dates. Our guide to aparthotels versus hotels sets out what to expect.
