The medieval town climbs the steep Punta San Francesco, a maze of alleys, steps and arches around the Swabian castle and the Romanesque cathedral. The Chianca Amara, the stone that recalls the 1554 sack of the town, is in the old streets, and Pizzomunno beach starts at the foot of the rock.

Between the old town and Punta Santa Croce, the small bay of Marina Piccola faces the lighthouse on the islet of Santa Eufemia and has a palm-shaded public garden. It is where most of the town's concerts, fairs and fireworks take place, and the flatter streets behind it, built from the 1800s, hold the town hall, municipal park and harbour.

Getting around Vieste

The nearest major airport is Bari, about 96 km away; in summer a shuttle bus links Bari Airport with Vieste, and private transfer companies also serve the route. Foggia's Gino Lisa airport also has a seasonal shuttle. Without a flight, take a train to Foggia station: SITA, Ferrovie del Gargano and Metauro buses link it with the Lungomare Europa bus station in Vieste, and Ferrovie del Gargano also runs direct summer coaches from cities in northern and central Italy.

Within town, the old centre, Marina Piccola and the two town beaches are walkable, and an urban circular bus serves the wider town. A car is the easiest way to reach the Foresta Umbra, Peschici and the beaches on the Mattinata road. From the harbour, boats run to the Tremiti Islands, and many of the sea caves along the coast are best seen on a boat trip.

Living in Vieste for longer

Vieste's tourist season is concentrated between June and September; outside those months the local economy turns back to olive growing and fishing and the town is far quieter, so check that the services you need are operating before booking a long off-season stay. Timetables for the urban circular bus and the airport shuttles change through the year.

The old centre is hilly and full of steps, so families with buggies or anyone with limited mobility may prefer a base near the flat seafronts of Lungomare Mattei or Lungomare Europa. Our guide to what an aparthotel is explains the difference from a holiday home.

When to visit Vieste

Vieste has a mild Mediterranean climate: January averages around 9°C, and in July and August average highs sit just under 30°C, kept from being oppressive by sea breezes. June to September is the beach season; outside it, the town is much quieter and many visitors come for the national park rather than the beaches.

The Feast of San Giorgio on 23 April includes a traditional horse race on Pizzomunno beach. On 9 May the statue of Santa Maria di Merino, the town's patron, is carried in procession about 7 km from the cathedral to her sanctuary, and on the first Saturday of September the feast of Santa Maria Stella Maris includes a procession by boat.

The town sits on a small rocky peninsula with long sandy beaches running north and south of it, while the rest of the coast is a sequence of coves, arches and grottoes, many reachable only by sea. Neighbouring Peschici is a short drive along the north coast, and Bari has the nearest major airport.
