Riva del Garda sits at the northern tip of Lake Garda in Trentino, between steep mountain walls and the open water, and has been a resort since the 19th century. Aparthotels and serviced apartments in Riva del Garda suit how people holiday here: cyclists, climbers and windsurfers who need space for kit and a kitchen after long days outdoors, and families staying a week or more by the beaches. The local tourist board lists apartments alongside hotels, campsites and farm stays as a standard way to stay.

The historic centre gathers around Piazza III Novembre and the 34 m Torre Apponale, whose 165 steps can be climbed for lake views. The moated Rocca fortress, now home to the town museum, stands by the harbour, and a panoramic lift climbs to the Bastione fortress on the cliff above town.

East of the centre, freely accessible beaches such as the Spiaggia dei Sabbioni line the shore, with a flower-lined promenade behind them separating the sand from bars, bistros and gelaterias. The lakeside road continues past the San Nicolò marina towards Monte Brione and Torbole.

Across Monte Brione in the neighbouring municipality of Nago-Torbole, Torbole is a lakeside village known, like Riva, for the reliable winds that draw sailors, windsurfers and kitesurfers. It is linked to Riva by the lakeshore path, local buses and ferries.
The nearest airports are Verona (about 85 km), Brescia (about 75 km) and Bergamo (about 130 km). Buses run year-round from Riva to Rovereto and Trento, and south along the lake to Garda and Verona's railway station and airport. The nearest railway station is Rovereto, about 20 km away, with direct trains from Germany and Austria; regular buses link it with Riva, and shuttle services also run to Rovereto station and to the Verona and Bergamo airports.
In town, the old centre is easy to walk, and Trentino Trasporti buses connect Riva with Arco, Torbole and the surrounding villages. Bus&Go is an on-demand bus you book through an app. Navigarda hydrofoils, catamarans and ferries link Riva with towns around the lake, and many guests receive a Garda Guest Card from their accommodation, which covers local public transport and lake navigation.
If your accommodation is a Garda Trentino partner, ask for the Garda Guest Card: it is free, activated in the Mio Trentino app, valid for your whole stay from the day you arrive, and covers buses, lake ferries, the Bastione lift and entry to several museums and castles. A weekly farmers' market sells fruit, vegetables, honey and juices from local producers.
The old Ponale road, closed to traffic in 1998, is now a walking and cycling route up to Lake Ledro, and bike shuttles can carry you and your bike to trailheads. Our guide to what an aparthotel is explains how apartment stays differ from a holiday let.
Riva has a mild climate for its latitude, with olive and lemon trees growing around the lake. Summers are warm rather than oppressive, with July averaging about 17–28°C and afternoon lake breezes, while January averages about -1 to 6°C with occasional snow. The regular winds make spring to autumn the main season for sailing and windsurfing.
Riva hosts open-air concerts and art exhibitions, and Rock Master, one of the most historic and prestigious climbing competitions in the world, takes place in nearby Arco, now as a three-day festival. Guided tastings of wine, olive oil and local specialities are offered too.
The compact old town is mostly pedestrianised, and the lakeshore promenade runs east towards Torbole. Climbing hub Arco is just inland, and ferries cross the lake to towns such as Malcesine, where a cable car climbs Monte Baldo.
