Getting around Malcesine

Malcesine has no railway station; the town is served by buses and by boats on the lake, including express hydrofoils and a car ferry. VisitGarda lists bus line 484 Garda–Malcesine–Riva del Garda along the eastern shore. The Navigazione Laghi timetable includes Malcesine Centro among Lake Garda stops.

For flights, VisitGarda says the nearest airports are Verona-Villafranca, about 15 km from the lake, and Brescia-Montichiari, 30 km away, both at the southern end and linked to the Verona and Brescia stations by an aerobus. Bergamo-Orio al Serio is about 80 km from the lake, and Milan Linate, Milan Malpensa and Venice about 100 km. Plan the last stretch up the eastern shore by bus, boat or transfer.

The Malcesine-Monte Baldo cable car climbs in just over 10 minutes from the valley station to 1,760 m at the top, rising more than 1,600 m. In its second stage the cabin rotates 360 degrees, and the line has three stations including San Michele at about 562 m. Bikes can be taken up, and the paragliding launch site is not far from the top station.

Living in Malcesine for longer

Wikivoyage lists a tourist information office (IAT Malcesine) at the bus station on Via Gardesana. Buses run along the eastern shore, and boats link the towns around the lake; Wikivoyage also lists a summer car ferry between Malcesine and Limone sul Garda on the western shore.

For stays of several weeks, mix the lake with the mountain: the cable car reaches Monte Baldo for hikes of varying difficulty, and bikes can go up as well, with rides in the summer when the Baldo provincial road no. 3 opens. See our aparthotel vs hotel guide for how the two types of stay compare, or Verona, the city that gives the province its name.

When to visit Malcesine

VisitGarda describes the Garda climate as exceptionally mild and temperate, thanks to the lake, with a sub-Mediterranean character. In June to August, lake water is typically 17–27 °C and the air 24–32 °C; March to May air is 15–24 °C and water 9–18 °C, and in October and November air is 10–20 °C and water 10–15 °C.

Two main winds shape the day on the lake: the Pelèr blows from north to south in the morning, and the Ora blows from the south in the afternoon until evening. The cable car and the ski slopes on Monte Baldo give the town a second season in winter, when snow is common on the mountain.

The comune is listed among I Borghi più belli d'Italia, 'the most beautiful villages of Italy', and stretches along the Via Gardesana Orientale between the water and the slopes of Monte Baldo. It is the northernmost comune on the Veneto shore, with Trentino-Alto Adige immediately to the north. Our Italy hub covers the rest of the country, and Riva del Garda and Garda are the end points of the bus line that runs along this shore.
