Aparthotels & serviced apartments in Florence

46 stays · 34 aparthotels and 12 serviced apartments · from €197/night

Florence's historic centre is small enough to cross on foot in half an hour, but it is also busy and expensive, so aparthotels and serviced apartments in Florence give you a calmer base with room to spread out. A kitchen means you can shop at the Mercato Centrale and cook Tuscan produce, which suits families, students on language or art courses and anyone using the city as a base for longer trips around Tuscany.

Where to stay in Florence

Duomo and historic centre

  • first-time visitors
  • sightseeing
  • culture

The streets around Santa Maria del Fiore put the Uffizi, the Ponte Vecchio and the Bargello within a short walk. Many streets are closed to traffic or too narrow for buses, so you will walk almost everywhere. It is the most convenient area, but also the most crowded.

San Lorenzo and Santa Maria Novella

  • transport links
  • food markets
  • short stays

North-west of the Duomo, this area takes in the Mercato Centrale, a large food market, and Santa Maria Novella, the main railway station. Both tram lines stop at the station, including the T2 to the airport, and the city's main bus station is next door.

Santa Croce

  • culture
  • nightlife
  • couples

East of the centre, narrow medieval back streets lead to the basilica of Santa Croce, where Michelangelo, Galileo and Machiavelli are buried. The square in front hosts the Calcio Storico matches each June, and the area has plenty of bars and restaurants.

Oltrarno and Santo Spirito

  • long stays
  • artisan shops
  • food

South of the river, the Oltrarno has long been home to Florence's artisans, and its workshops, antique dealers and the square of Santo Spirito give it a more local feel. The Pitti Palace and Boboli Gardens are here, and the Ponte Vecchio leads straight to the centre.

Campo di Marte

  • families
  • quiet stays
  • rail links

Campo di Marte gives its name to the city's second quarter, east of the centre, and has one of Florence's main railway stations alongside Santa Maria Novella and Rifredi. It is a practical choice for longer stays away from the tourist crowds.

Getting around Florence

Florence Airport (Amerigo Vespucci, known locally as Peretola) is about 4 km north-west of the centre. Tram line T2 runs from the airport past Santa Maria Novella station and, since January 2025, on to Piazza San Marco, taking about 35 minutes end to end. Many visitors also fly into Pisa or Bologna, both linked to Florence by train.

Florence has two tram lines: T1 runs from Villa Costanza, a park-and-ride on the A1 motorway, through Scandicci to Santa Maria Novella and on to the Careggi hospital area, while T2 serves the airport. Autolinee Toscane runs the city buses and trams; you can buy tickets in the at bus app, at tobacconists and machines, or tap a contactless bank card on board. The historic centre is flat and best explored on foot.

Living in Florence for longer

If you will use public transport regularly, the at bus app and contactless tap-on payment save hunting for ticket vendors, and Autolinee Toscane sells day passes. A bicycle is useful too, as the centre is flat and cycle paths make it quicker to circle the old town than to cross it.

For food shopping, the Mercato Centrale sells fresh produce, meat, seafood and olives, often at lower prices than supermarkets, and the restaurants with the best value tend to be outside the historic centre. Summer days often exceed 30°C, so air-conditioning is worth checking for a stay between June and August.

When to visit Florence

Florence has a Mediterranean climate with hot, mostly dry summers, when July and August reach around 33°C, and mild, wet winters with daytime highs of about 11–14°C. Spring and autumn are mild to warm and the most comfortable for sightseeing.

On Easter Sunday the Scoppio del Carro sets off fireworks from a cart outside the Duomo. Calcio Storico, a rough historic football game between the four quarters of the city, fills Piazza Santa Croce in June, with the final on 24 June, the feast of St John the Baptist, the city's patron saint.

Most of the sights lie north of the Arno around the Duomo, while the Oltrarno across the river has a more local, artisan feel. For other Tuscan bases, look at Siena and Lucca, or browse the Italy hub.
