Wikivoyage describes the area inside the walls as compact, and says driving within them is mostly reserved to residents, so the centre is best explored on foot or by bike.

Via Fillungo is the main shopping street, running roughly north to south through the centre, according to Wikivoyage, which lists it as full of shops and bars. The Guinigi tower, topped with trees, offers views over the city, but has no lift. The Roman amphitheatre outline survives as Piazza dell'Anfiteatro, with houses of medieval origin.

Wikivoyage says Puccini lived from 1891 at Torre del Lago on the coast, 20 km west of Lucca, where his villa is now a museum. The annual Puccini festival is held nearby in July and August. It is a separate coastal base rather than part of the walled city.
Wikivoyage names Pisa Galileo Galilei International Airport, 2 km south of Pisa, as the airport, with a direct Viabus service to Lucca taking one hour, or the Pisamover light railway to Pisa Centrale and a change for Lucca. On rail, Wikivoyage says Lucca is on the main line from Viareggio to Florence Santa Maria Novella, with direct trains from both cities and trains from Pisa Centrale.
