Where to stay
Best areas to stay in London for a month: a neighbourhood guide
6 min read · Updated
The best areas to stay in London for a month are Kensington for museums and residential streets, Mayfair for a central West End base, Shoreditch for an eastern creative scene, Canary Wharf for a business-led stay and Stratford for easy transport and shopping. Choose by the Tube or Elizabeth line station you will use daily.
A month changes the question. For a weekend, a famous address wins. Over thirty days you will shop for food, do laundry, work from a desk and take the same line to the same place. This guide compares the main bases on those terms, then covers airports, rail networks and seasons. For stays, see aparthotels and serviced apartments in London.
The best areas to stay in London for a month: how to choose
London lies on the River Thames, about 50 miles upstream from its North Sea estuary according to Britannica, and Greater London covers 607 square miles. Wikivoyage groups it into central, inner and outer areas, with Westminster, Mayfair and Marylebone, South Kensington and Chelsea, Soho, the South Bank and the City in the centre, and the East End, Greenwich and Hackney in the inner ring.
The Tube is the backbone. Wikipedia reports 11 lines, 272 stations and about 402 km of track, with the world's first underground passenger railway opening on 10 January 1863. The Elizabeth line adds a fast east-west route: Wikipedia gives 41 stations, and says passenger services began on 24 May 2022. For a month, two checks matter more than the neighbourhood name: which lines the nearest station offers, and how far the apartment is from it.
| Area | Character | Rail links | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kensington and South Kensington | Affluent, residential and museum-rich; many terraces divided into flats | Circle and District lines; Piccadilly at South Kensington and Gloucester Road | Families and visitors who value museums and green space |
| Mayfair | Affluent West End district; increasingly commercial; no Tube station inside it | Nearby Bond Street, Marble Arch, Oxford Circus, Green Park and Piccadilly Circus | A central, high-end base within walking distance of shopping and parks |
| Shoreditch | Gentrified creative district with bars and clubs; nicknamed Silicon Roundabout | Overground at Shoreditch High Street; Northern line at Old Street; Liverpool Street nearby | Younger, creative or tech-led stays |
| Canary Wharf | Business district on the Isle of Dogs; residential towers | Jubilee line, DLR and Elizabeth line | Stays tied to the financial district |
| Stratford | East London retail and leisure centre; Olympic legacy | Elizabeth, Central, Jubilee, DLR, Overground and National Rail | Stays that want many lines in one station |
Kensington long stay: is it a good area for a month?
Kensington sits in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, about 4.6 km west of Charing Cross according to Wikipedia, which calls it an extremely affluent area. South Kensington, at the southern end of Exhibition Road, is the main cluster of museums, including the Natural History Museum, the V&A and the Science Museum. Much of the district is residential, and many large Georgian and Victorian terraces have been divided into flats.
Three zone 1 stations serve most of it: High Street Kensington, Gloucester Road and South Kensington. The Circle and District lines call at all three, and the Piccadilly line serves South Kensington and Gloucester Road, so you have a direct link to Heathrow and to central stations. For a Kensington long stay the draw is a settled routine on quiet streets, with museums and Hyde Park on foot.
Wikipedia notes that the Royal Borough is the most densely populated local government district in the United Kingdom. In practice, apartments tend to be compact, so ask for floor area and the lift situation.
Mayfair: is it a good base for a month?
Wikipedia describes Mayfair as an affluent area of Westminster in the West End, bounded by Oxford Street, Regent Street, Piccadilly and Park Lane, with Hyde Park and Green Park along its edges. It says the district has become increasingly commercial, with many houses converted to offices and embassies, while keeping high-end housing, shops and restaurants. Searches for serviced apartments in Mayfair usually come from people who want that West End position.
No Tube station sits inside Mayfair itself. Wikipedia lists Marble Arch, Bond Street and Oxford Circus on the northern edge, on the Central line, and Piccadilly Circus and Green Park on the south. Bond Street also has an Elizabeth line station, opened on 24 October 2022, with interchanges to the Central and Jubilee lines. For a Mayfair long stay, check which edge station your address is nearest to.

Shoreditch and Stratford: east London for a month
Wikipedia describes Shoreditch as an area of London's East End in the London Borough of Hackney that has gentrified since the 1990s into a fashionable area associated with creative industries. Tech firms clustered around Old Street Roundabout, which gave rise to the nickname Silicon Roundabout. Curtain Road and Old Street are known for pubs, bars and clubs, so ask about noise when you look for a trendy aparthotel in Shoreditch.
Rail access is good. Shoreditch High Street is on the London Overground, which runs 24-hour trains on Friday and Saturday nights, and Old Street is on the Northern line. Wikipedia notes that Liverpool Street, a short distance away, serves the Central, Circle, Hammersmith and City, and Metropolitan lines and National Rail, but it does not describe an Elizabeth line station in Shoreditch.
Stratford, in the London Borough of Newham, is described by Wikipedia as east London's primary retail, cultural and leisure centre and the area's second most significant business location after Canary Wharf. It was regenerated for the 2012 Olympics, and Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park opened to the public in 2014. Wikipedia lists National Rail, the Elizabeth line, the Central and Jubilee lines, the DLR, the Overground and High Speed 1 services at Stratford, which makes it one of the best-connected stations in the east.
Canary Wharf long stay: when a business district works
Wikipedia describes Canary Wharf as a privately owned central business district on the Isle of Dogs, with around 105,000 people working there, many residential high-rises and a shopping centre of more than 310 shops. It is served by the Jubilee line, the DLR and the Elizabeth line.
A Canary Wharf long stay suits anyone whose work is there, since the commute can be on foot. It will feel quieter at weekends and in the evening than the West End, and the character differs from the older residential streets of Kensington. London City Airport is 3.5 miles from Canary Wharf according to Wikivoyage, which can matter for short European flights, with onward travel by DLR.
“The line provides the area with a frequent, direct connection to the City of London and the West End.”
Getting around London: Tube, Elizabeth line and airports
Wikipedia says contactless payment on the Tube arrived with Oyster in 2003 and bank-card contactless in September 2014. Wikivoyage says you may be able to touch in and out with an Oyster or contactless card within the Oyster and contactless area, which includes Heathrow and Gatwick. Check the fare rules for the zones you will use before settling on a payment method, and read the aparthotel extra charges and city taxes guide for how charges and taxes can add to a stay.
Heathrow lies 14 miles (23 km) west of central London, according to Wikipedia. The Elizabeth line serves Heathrow Terminals 4 and 5 and charges a premium fare for Heathrow journeys, and the Piccadilly line also serves the airport. Wikivoyage notes that Gatwick has two terminals and sits in the Oyster area, that Luton is around 30 miles from London, and that London City is 5.6 km from Canary Wharf.
For a month, the useful move is to check the first and last mile: how far the apartment is from the station you will use for the airport, and what the late-evening service looks like.
| Station | Interchange | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Paddington | Underground and National Rail | The western end of the central section; Heathrow and Reading services |
| Bond Street | Central and Jubilee lines | Mayfair and the West End |
| Farringdon | Thameslink and several Underground lines | Cross-city interchanges |
| Canary Wharf | Jubilee line, DLR and National Rail | Business stays |
| Stratford | National Rail, Overground, Central and Jubilee lines, DLR | East London and the Olympic Park |
Seasons: when is a month in London easiest?
Wikivoyage describes London as mild on average, with as much as one in three days bringing rain and July and August highs of about 23.5°C. It puts December and January highs around 8°C and says autumn is often the wettest and windiest season, though September can still be warm. Snow is rare, and Wikivoyage notes the city copes poorly with it.
The Met Office's 1991 to 2020 averages for its Hampstead station show January highs of about 7.5°C, July highs of about 22.7°C and annual rainfall of about 722 mm, with October the wettest month at around 79 mm. Treat this as a guide to London generally, since a single station cannot describe every district.
The season changes how a neighbourhood works. In summer a park nearby, such as Hyde Park near Kensington, is worth having. In winter a shorter walk to a station and a flat with good heating matter more.
“Despite having perhaps a fair reputation for being unsettled, London enjoys a mild climate on average.”
