Aparthotels and serviced apartments in Ottawa suit the way the capital is used. Parliament Hill, the Supreme Court and a long list of national museums sit close together downtown, and the city is home to the University of Ottawa, Carleton University and Algonquin College, so many visits run to a week or more. A kitchen and separate living space make that easier, particularly for families and for anyone working on a government, academic or business assignment.

This is the political and museum core of the city: Parliament Hill, the Supreme Court and Rideau Hall are part of the capital's landmarks, and the National Arts Centre and National Gallery of Canada are also in the central area. The underground downtown stretch of O-Train Line 1 serves Lyon, Parliament and Rideau stations, so you can reach most of the sights without a car.

ByWard Market is a retail and entertainment district in the downtown core, east of Parliament Hill and close to the Rideau Centre shopping mall. Outdoor stalls along George, York, ByWard and William streets sell produce, flowers and crafts when the weather allows, and the market buildings stay open year-round. Wikipedia describes the four blocks around the market as having the densest concentration of eating places, bars and nightclubs in the National Capital Region, so expect evening noise if you choose a street-facing apartment.

The Glebe lies just south of downtown, bounded by the Queensway to the north and the Rideau Canal to the east and south. It is one of Ottawa's first suburbs, with a Bank Street corridor of small shops and restaurants, a mix of family houses and rental apartments, and parks around Patterson Creek and Brown's Inlet. Lansdowne Park is the home of TD Place Stadium, used by the Ottawa Redblacks and the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees, which is worth knowing when matches or events fill the neighbourhood.

Westboro is in the west end along the Ottawa River, with Island Park Drive as its eastern edge. Richmond Road is the main street, with outdoor-gear shops, restaurants and boutiques, and two OC Transpo stations serve the neighbourhood. Most of the housing dates from the early to mid twentieth century, which gives it a residential feel that suits stays of several weeks.
Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International Airport is about 15 km south of downtown. Since January 2025 O-Train Line 4, a four-kilometre diesel line, runs between South Keys station and the airport terminal, stopping at Uplands on the way; the airport station is at departures level and the line connects with Line 2 at South Keys. From Line 2 you can change onto Line 1 at Bayview station for the downtown stations. Taxis, limousines and shuttle buses are available at the airport 24 hours a day, and ride-hailing services also operate there.

For food shopping, the open-air stalls of ByWard Market are the obvious central choice, and the Bank Street corridor in the Glebe has small shops and restaurants within walking distance of the canal. Ottawa has a high proportion of university-educated residents and a large public sector, and the city has been nicknamed Silicon Valley North for its technology industry, so central apartments tend to attract business and academic visitors. In the warmer months the Capital Pathway makes it easy to run, cycle or commute without driving.
