Naha sits on the East China Sea coast of the southern part of Okinawa Island and has about 317,000 residents; its airport is the hub of Okinawa Prefecture. Aparthotels and serviced apartments suit it because Naha is the base for the whole island and its outliers: a kitchen is handy when you are moving between markets, beaches and day trips, and extra space helps families and longer-stay visitors. Our guide to what an aparthotel is explains the format if it is new to you.

Omoromachi is a Yui Rail station serving the Shintoshin area, one of the places Wikipedia lists the monorail as linking with the centre of Naha, Kokusai-dori and Shuri. It is a practical base if you want a station on the line and a short ride into the centre.

Shuri

  • culture
  • quiet stays

Shuri is the historic former capital and is served by the Yui Rail. It contains Shuri Castle, the former royal palace of the Ryukyu Kingdom, which Wikipedia notes is registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Other sights nearby include the Tamaudun Mausoleum and the Sonohyan-utaki sacred grove.

Getting around Naha

The Yui Rail has 19 stations running from Naha Airport to Tedako-Uranishi, with stops at Asahibashi, Makishi, Omoromachi and Shuri along the way. The line accepts IC cards, including OKICA and Suica, and a travel guide mentions 24-hour and 48-hour passes. Many buses also serve every part of the city, and bike share is available through HelloCycling and Docomo Cycle.

Naha Airport is the main hub of Okinawa Prefecture, and a monorail connects it with the city centre. If you plan to hire a car for the rest of the island, a travel guide notes that rental offices are off-site and reached by shuttle bus through congested roads, taking about half an hour one way, so allow time for that on arrival day. Kokusai-dori is on the monorail and the centre is easy to explore on foot.

Living in Naha for longer

The Makishi Public Market and the covered arcades around Kokusai-dori are the obvious places to shop for fresh fish, meat and vegetables, and a kitchen makes the most of them. The Yui Rail and city buses mean you can live in Naha without a car. Choose a base near the monorail line and you can reach the market, the castle and the airport easily.

For stays of several weeks, our relocation guide covers what is usually included in a serviced apartment. Naha is also the jumping-off point for the Kerama Islands from Tomari wharf, so a long stay can include several short island trips without moving accommodation.

When to visit Naha

Naha has a humid subtropical climate. Wikipedia describes hot summers with average highs above 31 degrees Celsius in July and August, mild winters with highs of around 19 to 20 degrees in January and February, and annual rainfall of more than 2,000 mm, with September the wettest month and December the driest.

Festivals are a reason to choose a month. Wikipedia lists Naha Hari in May and the Naha Festival in October, and Wikivoyage places the Naha Tug-of-war in October. Wikivoyage also mentions a fall typhoon season, so check forecasts before you travel.

The city covers about 40 square kilometres, and the Okinawa Urban Monorail, known as the Yui Rail, runs from the airport through the middle of it to Shuri. That makes a station-based search the sensible way to choose where to stay. For the rest of the country, see the Japan hub, or compare Miyako Island if you want a quieter island stay.
