City Centre and Viaduct Harbour

  • first-time visitors
  • business travel

The CBD has many of the main attractions and most of the accommodation. Waitematā Station (formerly Britomart) is the hub for trains, buses and harbour ferries, and the Viaduct Harbour and Wynyard Quarter on the waterfront are full of restaurants and bars. The red City Link bus loops through the centre.

South of the centre, Newmarket is one of New Zealand's most significant retail and hospitality destinations, with its own railway station and Inner and Outer Link buses passing through. It is a convenient base for longer stays that need easy access to both the CBD and the southern suburbs.

Devonport

  • quiet stays

On the North Shore, Devonport is about ten minutes by ferry from downtown, with small cafés and Mount Victoria, a volcanic cone with views over the harbour. The North Shore beaches beyond are mostly sandy, with safe swimming.

Getting around Auckland

Auckland Airport is 22 km south of the centre in Māngere. The orange AirportLink bus runs every 10 minutes from about 4.30am to after midnight between the terminals, Puhinui station and Manukau, and from Puhinui trains run to the city centre. The SkyDrive express coach runs direct to the SkyCity terminal in the CBD every 30 minutes.

Auckland Transport (AT) runs the buses, trains and ferries. Pay with an AT HOP card or by tapping a contactless bank card or phone at the same fare, and tag on and off every time; fares are zone-based with free transfers and a weekly cap. Since the City Rail Link opened in September 2026, Waitematā has been a through station, with trains running under the city centre via the new Te Waihorotiu and Karanga-a-Hape stations to the southern, eastern and western suburbs, and the Northern Express buses use a dedicated busway to the North Shore. Ferries from downtown serve Devonport and the Hauraki Gulf islands.

Living in Auckland for longer

Use the AT mobile app to check real-time departures, since some services run less often. The weekly fare cap on trains, buses and inner harbour ferries makes daily commuting predictable, and you can top up an AT HOP card at retailers and major stations.

Rain falls throughout the year, more in winter than in summer, so a home with a dryer or good airflow is worth looking for. At weekends, Aucklanders head for the volcanic cones such as Mount Eden and One Tree Hill, the Tamaki Drive beaches at Mission Bay and St Heliers, or the Waitākere Ranges in the west.

When to visit Auckland

Auckland has a mild climate with four distinct seasons; summer averages highs of around 23°C, winter nights rarely fall below freezing, and snow is extremely rare. The sea is warmest in February, averaging around 21°C.

Late summer is festival season. The Auckland Arts Festival runs in March, and the Pasifika Festival, the largest festival of its type in the world with more than 200,000 visitors, takes over Western Springs Reserve, also in March.

The central business district holds the bulk of the city's accommodation, with harbour ferries and the main train station on its waterfront. If you are moving here, our relocation guide may help; for the rest of the country, see Queenstown, Wellington and the New Zealand hub.
