Getting around Wellington

Wikivoyage places Wellington Airport in Rongotai, about 5 km southeast of the central city, on an isthmus between the Miramar Peninsula and Mount Victoria. It describes an Airport Express bus service adjacent to the arrivals hall, with a Metlink route 2 bus as another public option from Hobart Street, plus ride-sharing, shuttle vans and taxis outside the terminal. Wikivoyage says regular ferries connect Wellington with Picton on the South Island, operated by Interislander and Bluebridge.

Metlink, the public transport arm of the Greater Wellington Regional Council, coordinates buses, trains and ferries across the region and offers a journey planner. Wikivoyage says the central bus corridor between the Railway Station and Courtenay Place, known as the Golden Mile, is heavily served, and that Snapper cards and contactless bank cards both work on buses and trains. Metlink Explorer day passes are also available.

Living in Wellington for longer

Wikivoyage describes the city core as linear and compact, with Willis Street, Manners Street and Courtenay Place making up the walking route. The Waterfront runs from the Kumutoto area past Queen's Wharf to Frank Kitts Park and is popular for a stroll.

Wellington Anniversary Day is a regional public holiday observed on the Monday closest to 22 January, according to Wikivoyage. Snapper cards are available from most supermarkets and convenience stores, per Wikivoyage, which is useful if you will use buses every day.
