Abuja is Nigeria's purpose-built capital, planned from scratch and home to the federal government, the diplomatic community and the headquarters of many national agencies. Most visitors come for government business, NGO work or postings that last weeks or months, which is why aparthotels and serviced apartments in Abuja are a popular choice: a kitchen, a separate living area and room to work make a long assignment far more comfortable than a hotel room.

Maitama is an upscale residential district in the north of Phase 1, home to many embassies, high commissions and government buildings. Landmarks include Minister's Hill, the Unity Fountain and the IBB Golf Club, and it is close to the Central District and Wuse.

Wuse and Wuse II form the city's commercial heart, with shops, restaurants and offices. Wuse Market, the main market in Abuja, sells everything from fresh food to clothes and electronics, which makes this a practical base for self-catering.

The Central Business District sits at the core of Phase 1, around the National Mosque, which is open to non-Muslims outside prayer times, and the National Christian Centre. Millennium Park, a large landscaped park with lawns and fountains, is a short drive away.

Garki is one of Abuja's main business and administrative districts, with many government offices. It sits in the south-west of the inner city, within easy reach of the Central Business District and Asokoro.

Close to Aso Rock and the Presidential Villa, Asokoro is often described as the most secure area of the city. It is largely residential and diplomatic in character and suits visitors on official business who want to be near the seat of government.

West of Wuse, Jabi is built around Jabi Lake, where you can stroll, take a boat ride or eat fresh fish. Jabi Lake Mall sits on its shore, and neighbouring Utako adds more offices and shops.

Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport lies west of the city and has separate international and domestic terminals. Most arrivals take a taxi or a ride-hailing app such as Uber or Bolt into the centre. The Abuja Light Rail links the airport with the Abuja Metro station in the Central Business District via stations including Idu, and a second line runs from Idu to Kubwa; services resumed in May 2024 but run only a few times a day.
Within the city, a car or taxi is the main way to get around, as public transport is limited. Ride-hailing apps such as Uber and Bolt are widely used, and the planned capital has good road infrastructure.
For everyday shopping, Wuse Market covers fresh food and household goods, while Ceddi Plaza and Jabi Lake Mall offer a more modern shopping environment. Choosing an apartment in Wuse II, Maitama or Jabi keeps most errands to a short ride.
Millennium Park and the paths around Jabi Lake are the city's main green spaces for exercise and weekend walks. If you are moving to Abuja for work, our guide to serviced apartments for relocation covers what to check before a long let.
Abuja has a tropical wet-and-dry climate. The rainy season runs from April to October, with daytime temperatures mostly between 28°C and 30°C. From November to March the dry season brings dusty harmattan winds from the Sahara, and in the dry season days can reach 40°C while nights cool to about 20°C.
The dry season is the easier time for getting around and sightseeing trips to Aso Rock or Zuma Rock, although the harmattan brings dust and haze. Business travel continues year-round, but expect frequent rain from April to October.
The city is laid out in phases radiating out from Aso Rock, and the inner Phase 1 districts hold most of the offices, embassies and places to stay. Public transport is limited, so staying close to where you will work saves a lot of time in traffic. For the commercial capital, see Lagos.
