Doha, Qatar's capital, is home to most of the country's population and has grown at speed since the 1990s, with development accelerated by the 2006 Asian Games and the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Aparthotels and serviced apartments in Doha suit its two main kinds of visitor: professionals on assignment, who need a kitchen, laundry and workspace for weeks at a time, and families on stopovers or winter breaks who want more room than a hotel offers.

The rebuilt heart of the old city, Msheireb Downtown, has a free tram loop, the four historic houses of the Msheireb Museums, and Msheireb station, where all three metro lines meet. Souq Waqif, with its gold and fabric souqs, restaurants and sheesha cafés, is a short walk east, as is the Corniche.

Doha's modern business district of towers sits at the northern end of the Corniche, with major shopping centres and its own metro station. Free shuttle buses run within West Bay, and the Corniche promenade leads south towards the Museum of Islamic Art.

Katara Cultural Village is a complex designed to resemble a traditional Qatari village, with an open-air amphitheatre, opera house, galleries and restaurants. It operates Doha's public beach and hosts festivals and film screenings.
The Pearl-Qatar is an artificial island of nearly 400 hectares off the coast north of West Bay. It is largely residential, which suits longer, self-contained stays by the water.

North of the city, Lusail is a planned city designed for around 450,000 people, at the northern end of the metro's Red Line, with its own four-line tram network that takes the same travel card. It is home to the Lusail International Circuit, which hosts the Formula 1 and MotoGP Qatar Airways Grands Prix.
Hamad International Airport is the hub of Qatar Airways and is linked to the city by the Doha Metro's Red Line, which runs north through the centre and West Bay to Lusail. Karwa taxis, bookable through the Karwa app or hailed at the airport, and Uber are the alternatives; agree that the meter will be used before you set off.
The Doha Metro has three lines, Red, Gold and Green, meeting at Msheireb, and covers the airport, West Bay, Education City and Al Wakrah; you tap a travel card on entry and exit. Free feeder buses and shared Karwa rides connect some areas to stations. Mostly electric Karwa buses serve the wider city and other towns, trams run in Lusail, Msheireb and Education City, and taxis can be scarce away from malls, hotels and the airport. Traffic is heavy and roads change often, so check routes before driving.
Big malls carry the main supermarkets, with Carrefour branches in several of them, and Souq Waqif is good for spices, fabric and household goods. A base close to a metro station makes daily life much easier, given the heat and the shortage of taxis at busy times.

Doha has a hot desert climate. From June to September daytime highs average 39–42°C, while winter, from about December to February, is mild with highs of 22–25°C and occasional light rain. November to March is the most comfortable time to visit and the season for outdoor events and markets.
Late September to November is busy with major events: the Doha Jewellery and Watches Exhibition (28 September to 3 October in 2026), the Qatar Boat Show (4 to 7 November in 2026), international padel and martial-arts events, and the MotoGP and Formula 1 Qatar Airways Grands Prix at Lusail International Circuit (6 to 8 and 27 to 29 November in 2026). Book early for race weekends.
The city curves around Doha Bay, from the souqs and museums of the old centre to the towers of West Bay and the new districts further north. English is the everyday language of shops and services. For another Gulf stay, see Muscat or Salalah.
