Where to go, month by month

Where are the best places to travel in June?

Facts checked against the cited sources on

June sits on the hinge between hemispheres. North of the equator it is the start of summer, with the warmest weather still ahead in July and August. South of it, Cusco and Mauritius are in the cooler half of the year, which suits Cusco as its dry season and Mauritius as its less humid one. This page gives eight places that fit June, each with the reason and the trade-off that comes with it.

This is our own selection, not a ranking. We picked places where June has a specific, checkable draw: a festival date published by an official page, or a monthly figure from the WMO World Weather Information Service. The figures are long-term averages for one station each, over the period named in the table, so a single day can differ widely. If you are planning the following months, see best places to travel in July.

Lisbon: warm days before the summer peak

Lisbon suits June because it is warm and still relatively dry. The WMO lists an average June high of 24.8 degrees Celsius and a low of 15.6 at the Lisboa station, with 21.2 mm of rain over 5 days (1961 to 1990 normals). That rainfall is roughly a fifth of the January figure at the same station, and the daytime high is a few degrees below the July and August averages.

The trade-off is that these are old normals and one station, so treat them as the pattern rather than a forecast. Rain is rare in June but not absent, so keep a light layer for the evenings. Browse Lisbon stays early if your dates are fixed, since dates fill up for any city break.

Stockholm: the mild start of the Swedish summer

Stockholm is a June pick for travellers who like warmth without heat. The WMO gives an average June high of 20.8 degrees Celsius and a low of 11.6, with 61.7 mm of rain over 12.9 days (1991 to 2020 normals). The same table shows July as the warmest month, at an average high of 23.6, so June is the gentler lead-in.

Expect showers. June rainfall at this station is about double the April figure, and rain falls on around two days in five. Waterproofs and indoor backups, such as museums, make the trip easier. For stays of a week or more, Stockholm suits a longer stay, where a kitchen lets you cook some meals, and our guide on cooking in an aparthotel kitchen covers what to check.

Tallinn: Midsummer bonfires on 23 and 24 June

Tallinn earns its place for Midsummer. The Visit Tallinn site, read in October 2026, gives Midsummer's Eve (Jaanilaupäev) as 23 June and Midsummer or St John's Day (Jaanipäev) as 24 June. Its main recommendation for the eve is the Estonian Open Air Museum, which it describes as offering bonfires, folk costumes, music, dance and games, with the evening starting at 7 pm. The page is a general guide that is not tied to one year, so confirm programmes and tickets for your own dates.

The weather is cool. At the Tallinn station the WMO lists an average June high of 19.1 degrees Celsius and a low of 9.7, with 60.7 mm of rain over 9 days (1971 to 2000 normals). Those normals end in 2000, so they may understate recent warmth. The Estonian country hub lists the stays we hold there.

Cusco: the driest month, with freezing nights

Cusco is the southern-hemisphere winter pick. At the Cuzco station, the WMO lists average June rainfall of just 1.5 mm, against 145.3 mm in January, so June is the driest month in the table. The average high is 19.5 degrees Celsius, which suits walking and sightseeing at altitude.

The cost of dry weather is cold at night. The same table gives an average June low of 0.3 degrees Celsius. The WMO page does not state the normals period for this station, and it lists no rain-day count. Pack warm layers and ask about heating before you book. See Cusco for stays, and check the official health guidance for travel at high altitude.

Bali: the start of the drier months

Bali has no cold season, but it has a wet and a dry one. At Denpasar, the WMO lists 53 mm of rain over 6 days in June, compared with 345 mm over 27 days in January (1961 to 1990 normals). The average June high is 31.4 degrees Celsius and the low is 23.5, which is a little cooler than the spring months at the same station.

That makes June a sensible month for beach and temple days, though the figures describe one southern station and rain varies across the island. Compare areas and availability before you choose. Browse Bali stays.

Montreal: jazz festival season, with rain to plan for

Montreal fits June because of its festival calendar and the contrast with winter. The Montreal International Jazz Festival lists its next edition as 25 June to 4 July 2027 on its own website, read in October 2026.

At the Montreal station the WMO gives an average June high of 23.1 degrees Celsius and a low of 10.9, against an average January high of minus 7.0 (1971 to 2000 normals). The catch is rain: 99.7 mm over 13.5 days, close to the wettest month of the year at that station. Pack for showers and check the festival's own site for programme details. See Montreal for stays.

Zanzibar: a lull in the rain

Zanzibar sits just south of the equator and follows wet and dry seasons rather than summer and winter. At the Zanzibar station the WMO lists June rainfall of 7.13 mm over 5 days, against 40.9 mm over 17 days in April (1971 to 2000 normals). The average June high is 29.0 degrees Celsius and the low is 21.8.

Nights are cooler than in the hotter months at the same station, which some visitors find more comfortable. The figures are decades old and describe one location, so the east and west coasts can differ. Look at Zanzibar for stays, and check the Tanzanian government's health and entry pages as your travel date approaches.

Mauritius: cooler, with less rain than the summer months

Mauritius is a pick for people who find the southern summer too humid. At the Plaisance station the WMO lists an average June high of 25.2 degrees Celsius and a low of 18.7, with 95 mm of rain over 14 days (1971 to 2000 normals). In February the same station records 267 mm.

The trade-off is that June is cooler and not dry, with rain on about every other day. These figures are for one station, so check your area. The island's country hub shows the stays we have there.

June climate at a glance

The table collects the June figures quoted above so you can compare them. All come from the WMO World Weather Information Service pages for each station, and the normals period differs by station, so compare patterns rather than exact numbers.

How we chose, and the limits of this list

We looked for places where June has a verifiable reason to go: a dated event on an official page, or a climate figure from a national weather service reported through the WMO. We balanced the list across both hemispheres and across city, mountain and island trips. We did not use traveller votes and we did not rank the places. The list leaves out many good destinations and says nothing about prices or availability.

Normals are averages over long periods, several of them decades old, and each is for a single station. Event dates are taken from official pages read in October 2026 and can change, so check the organiser before you book. Our when to book guide explains timing. Frequently asked questions

Which places are driest in June?

On the WMO figures above, Cusco has the least rain, at 1.5 mm, followed by Zanzibar at 7.13 mm and Lisbon at 21.2 mm. Montreal and Mauritius, at about 100 mm, are the wettest picks.

When is the Montreal jazz festival in 2027?

The festival's own website, read in October 2026, lists 25 June to 4 July 2027. Dates and programme can change, so confirm with the organiser before you book.

When is Midsummer in Tallinn?

Visit Tallinn gives 23 June as Midsummer's Eve and 24 June as Midsummer or St John's Day. Local programmes vary by year, so check them for your dates.

Is June winter anywhere on this list?

Yes. Cusco and Mauritius are south of the equator, where June falls in the cooler half of the year. In Cusco that means dry days and nights near freezing, while Mauritius is mild with frequent rain.

Do I need to book early for June?

Festival dates such as Midsummer or the jazz festival can fill places sooner, so earlier booking is sensible. Availability and rates vary by place, so compare options well before you travel.
