Getting around Odesa

The UK FCDO's advice, current on 4 October 2026, states that Ukraine's airspace remains closed to civil flights. Rail is the main way in from neighbouring countries: Wikivoyage lists a direct sleeper train from Lviv to Odesa-Holovna station (about 12 hours) and daytime and sleeper trains from Kyiv (7 to 10 hours). The station is in the Pryvoz area, next to the bus stations and the market.

Wikivoyage lists two main bus stations, at Pryvoz for shorter regional trips and the Central Bus Station for long-distance services, with minibuses to Moldova. The northern part of the central grid is compact and partly pedestrianised, and the city has trams, trolleybuses and marshrutkas; tram 5 runs from the bus station area through Moldavanka and past the railway station to Arcadia. Timetables change, so check them locally.

Living in Odesa for longer

Pryvoz, the large historic market near the main station, is the place Wikivoyage points to for everyday shopping. Derybasivska Street and the streets around it have cafés and restaurants. Moldavanka and the centre are the districts that feel like neighbourhoods rather than resorts.

For longer visits, an apartment with a kitchen lets you cook with ingredients from Pryvoz market. Anyone planning a longer move can read our notes on serviced apartments for relocation.

Odesa lies on the northwestern coast of the Black Sea. Its historic centre was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List on 25 January 2023 and was also placed on the List of World Heritage in Danger because of threats from the war in Ukraine. As of 4 October 2026, the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office advises against all travel to most of Ukraine, with different advice only for five western regions that do not include Odesa, so check official travel advice from your own government before planning.
