Karlovy Vary is a spa city of about 49,000 people in western Bohemia, set at the meeting of the Ohře and Teplá rivers, and part of the UNESCO World Heritage listing for the Great Spa Towns of Europe. Aparthotels and serviced apartments work well here because many guests come for spa stays, and a kitchen and separate living space are welcome when you are taking the waters, resting between treatments or travelling as a family or with friends.

The heart of the spa town, along the Teplá river, protected as an urban monument reservation. The Mill Colonnade, the largest, shelters five mineral springs, and the Hot Spring Colonnade houses Vřídlo, the best-known spring, which gushes as a geyser.

North of the city centre, this is the town's main railway station, with a city bus stop named Horní nádraží. Wikivoyage lists train journeys from Prague, Nuremberg and Dresden, with city buses running on into the spa centre.

Karlovy Vary Airport is 4.5 km south-east of the city centre, at Olšová Vrata, but Wikivoyage notes that it has very few scheduled international connections, so most visitors arrive via Prague. From Prague, Wikivoyage describes hourly coaches from Florenc and Dejvická taking about two hours, plus FlixBus services. Trains on the R5 line from Prague take around 3 hours 10 minutes, and Wikivoyage also lists journeys from Nuremberg and Dresden with one change.
Within the town, Dopravní podnik Karlovy Vary runs the city buses and two funiculars: the Diana, from the spa district to the Diana lookout tower, and the Imperial, from Divadelní náměstí, which Wikipedia calls the oldest tunnel funicular in Europe. The operator offers the Vary Virtual mobile fare system, and connections can be searched on IDOS. Wikivoyage says the centre can be covered comfortably on foot, while a car or motorbike helps for the countryside around.
Karlovy Vary is the most visited spa town in the Czech Republic, and a longer stay can revolve around the drinking cure: the springs have the same mineral origin, Wikipedia says, but each comes out at a different temperature, and only some of the more than 80 springs are for drinking. Wikivoyage lists the Hot Spring Colonnade as free to enter, and the Elizabeth Baths as having Communist-era baths downstairs.
Local products include Becherovka, produced here since 1807, the Carlsbad wafers first made in 1867 and Moser glass, founded in 1857. Wikivoyage lists the Jan Becher Museum, dedicated to the local liqueur.
The climate is humid continental, with an annual average of about 7.4 degrees Celsius according to Wikipedia, cold winters and mild summers, with June the wettest month and February the driest. The spa town operates all year, and the official site describes year-round attractions including thermal pools and cultural events.
The Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, one of the leading film events in Europe, takes place in early July, according to Wikivoyage, so book accommodation early for that month. Wikivoyage adds that bands play at the Mill Colonnade in summer.
The historic centre is compact enough to cover on foot, but the town is built along river valleys and steep wooded slopes, so it helps to choose carefully between the spa centre, the station districts and the hillsides. See the Czech Republic hub for other destinations, and Prague, about 106 km to the east, for a city break to combine with a spa stay.

Where room sizes are published, the median apartment here is 44 m².
